News: Safety on Area Lakes
|
|
randallh writes "When your are out on area lakes this summer on Richland Chambers Lake or Cedar Creek Lake, be sure to wear a life jacket. It's very important to do that and be sure that everybody in the boat has one on so your day in the sun will not turn into tragedy."

Why is it that all the old adages are making more and more sense to me these days? I liked it better when I didn’t know the meaning of the old wisdom, and said, "Duh...I don’t relate". So, If you understand the depth of wisdom in the phrases, it could mean that you, too, are getting dangerously close to becoming a charter member of the distinguished Senior Citizen Society. I’m not going to use the word old. It’s one of those three letter words that I try to never say. (I must be more worried about the three letter words thatI use than the four letter ones.) lol

randallh writes "Yesterday at College Park Mall, 100 job seekers landed jobs. Some were with local companies and some from the DFW metroplex. Also the former K-mart distribution center on South Highway 45 will be put to good use as Home Depot is getting ready to open the 1.4 millon square foot building for new workers. That is great news for Corsicana and Navarro County residents looking for work."

October and November in Navarro County are the main months for the pecan harvest. As you walk down the sidewalks of Kerens during the fall season, you are sure to see pecans which have fallen, helter-skelter, from the many trees that adorn the town. Many are small hard-shelled, native pecans, but you are also likely to encounter several varieties of larger hybrid pecans, sometimes called paper shells.

Business: Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Corsicana, Texas
|
|
randallh writes "Now that Chilis is building their restaurant on Highway 287 to be open hopefully this summer, maybe it wont be too long before Cracker Barrel will build theirs. They have signed a letter of intent. On West Seventh Street in Corsicana, Texas Sirloin Stockade hopefully will have their restaurant open soon. Chicken Express, which has restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, has opened in the former Bush's Chicken location. They were from Waco, Texas."

Anonymous writes "If you happen to go to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas this October, remember that Big Tex was once the Santa Claus on Main Street in Kerens, Texas. That's where Big Tex once stood in that nice town of Kerens, Texas on East Highway31. For many Christmas seasons he greeted both Kerens residents and visitors."

Have you ever had real home-made ice cream? Ice cream made in an old-fashioned, hand-turned ice cream freezer used to be one of our family’s special treats.
Town-bought ice cream that you buy at the stores today is quite different. Read the list of ingredients on the package you bring home, and you will see what I mean. There are stabilizers, preservatives, flavor enhancers (whatever that is), and much more. They even put in some type of texture enhancer to give the factory ice cream a slick, creamy feel, and to prevent ice crystals from forming. Now, I am not necessarily opposed to including all these things in ice cream–just pointing out that the stuff you buy today which passes for ice cream is not the same as what we used to make on the farm. We never really had an ingredient list, but it would have been a short one anyway–milk, cream, eggs, sugar, a pinch of salt, and natural vanilla flavoring. (Peaches or strawberries could be substituted for flavoring, but vanilla was the general rule.)

“I Wanna Hold Your Hand” is what they said on a Sunday night long ago when most of us had yet to learn of a small country named Vietnam. Remember those long haired boys that our parents made fun of because they didn’t have flat tops or crew cuts? Remember those moptop haircuts that every boy wanted to have? Remember the Garry Moore Show and his famous spoof of the band with his own “The Cockroachers” that was so entertaining to the adults because it ridiculed the Beatles? I will never forget it.

Movies: Meet the Fockers DVD Movie
|
|
randallh writes "In a few weeks the "Meet The Fockers" movie comes out on DVD. It is a very funny movie with a cast including Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Deniro, Blythe Danner, and Barbara Streisand. It should be a very funny comical movie. When it comes out, rent it, or better still buy it. Walmart or your local video store should have it in."

On the farm, we used the expression “laid by” to describe the completion of row crop work. When you were laid by, it meant that all the necessary cotton chopping, hoeing, spraying, and plowing activities were complete. If you were laid by in mid-July, it meant that you had a period of time when you could cease your field working activities and await the fall harvest.

Foxtales: My Dad and I.....and the Collins Street Bakery Wedding Cake
|
|
Column by Sandra Simmons Fox
When my father (Jarrell Simmons) worked for IDEAL BAKING CO. out of Tyler in the fifties, no one could talk him out of taking me with him on his route each Saturday! I tried every trick I had in my bag, without any luck. I could not sweet-talk my way out of this one! Saturdays were my special days, and I didn’t want to give them up.
My grandmother, Bessie tried to tell me that something good always comes from something bad, but sometimes it just takes you a lot longer to see the good. This incident challenged that wisdom. I should have had faith in her discerning words, because I was soon to see the good in the situation arrive, in the form of two ‘notably handsome guys.

For school kids living in the country around Kerens, school buses were a fact of life. Living out in Elm Flat, we had to take a bus to get to school. Later, living on the Vernon place east of Kerens, we often walked to and from school, but a school bus was available, and we often rode the bus on cold or rainy days.

randallh writes "The HIghway 287 bridge that goes to Palestine, Texas will be closed in May so that the bridge can be raised to make it less prone to flooding in that area of the county. It is long overdue. Most times drivers would have to exit that highway after it flooded because of recent heavy rains."

randallh writes "On West Seventh in Corsicana, Texas sits the world famous Collin Street Bakery where they have great tasting pies, cakes, and cookies. It's also home to the world famous Collin Street Deluxe Fruitcake which is shipped worldwide each Christmas season. So stop in today and you will be glad you did."

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #92 Computer Virus Prevention November 26th, 2001
|
|
We have talked in the past about various tools you can use to detect a virus on your computer. This includes the various Tool Suites such as the ones provided by Norton and McAfee and others. These are great for finding a virus and removing it from your system, but typically these tools come into action only after you have received an email bomb. Another limitation is these tools will not even detect a virus if you have not kept your virus signature library up to date with regular update downloads from your tool provider. If a new virus is created and received by your computer after you have purchased a virus detection tool, in most cases it will be undetectable. Nothing was known about it when they made the tool so it does not recognize the evil in it’s current form. If you are like me, doing these regular updates does slip by from time to time leaving a person in a weakened state of defense. Kind of like missing the inoculation shots for your cats isn’t it? So what do you do?

Woody: Hey, Mr. Peterson, what do you say to a cold one?
Norm: See you later, Vera, I'll be at Cheers.
-- Cheers, Norm's Last Hurrah
Sam: Well, look at you. You look like the cat that swallowed the canary.
Norm: And I need a beer to wash him down.
-- Cheers, Norm's Last Hurrah
Woody: Would you like a beer, Mr. Peterson?
Norm: No, I'd like a dead cat in a glass.
-- Cheers, Little Carla, Happy at Last, Part 2
