randallh writes "In Denton, Texas friday night I saw a very funny school play, The Revenge of the Space Pandas or Blinky Rudich and the Two Speed Clock. My niece, Amber Warner, was in the school play at MC Math Middle School in Denton. The play started out in Blinky's attic and then prgressed to the planet Crest View in a galaxy far far away, 50 light years from Earth. Bob the sheep was played by Eric Antonowicz. It was a great play. The American playwright David Mamet wrote the play."

Business: Super Kmart Enter To See New Life At Highway 31
|
|
randallh writes "The former Kmart Super Center at West Seventh Avenue and West Highway 31 will soon see new life for that vacant retail center. A man has bought the 170,000 square foot building and hopes to have six to seven tenants in the next five or six months. That is great news for the Corsicana, Texas area. That is too good a building to sit empty and now it will have some new retail. "

Column by Dr. Ivan R. Vernon
My grandparents built the old farmhouse on the Vernon place east of Kerens in 1917, the year of my Father’s birth. They constructed the house in the old-fashioned Southwestern style of architecture. The floor joists rested on upright wooden blocks, and there was no basement. The walls were formed of 1" x 12" boxing planks, with an exterior covering of wooden shiplap siding. The walls were not hollow, so they contained no insulation. The windows were single-pane–no insulation here either. The roof was covered with wooden shingles, and the attic was bereft of insulation.

Foxtales: The Lady In Fur There Are Some Decent Things Not Obtainable By All
|
|
Column by Sandra Simmons Fox
Since I am especially curious about mysterious things, I want to relate this humdrum incident that may appeal to only a few. I hope not, but it is highly possible; so here is the prosaic incident so hard for me to explain: and is really nothing at all. As in "It Has All Been Much A Do About Nothing."
I worked with a woman in the 70s who just couldn’t figure out some of the things I did, or things that just happened naturally. She had always gotten everything she ever wanted, no matter what. She was an only child, and her mother saw to it that she got the whole shebang as her heart desired.

The men I grew up with around Kerens were never particularly noted for their loquacity. In other words, they did not talk a lot, at least not in public. Many were of the strong silent type, and John Wayne can serve as the basic model. Now it is true that not every man was strong, but of course anybody can stay quiet . . . well, at least most people.
In a place where silence is valued, talking too much can be considered a character defect. I recall, years ago, asking my Dad about a certain individual, perhaps a mutual acquaintance from Kerens or maybe from one of the nearby communities. After holding his silence for a decent interval, my father finally uttered the devastating verdict, “Well he talks a good bit.” Another time, I heard the equally critical variation, “Well, he is a good talker . . .” Once I recall hearing a talkative person along with the whole of Protestantism resoundingly demeaned in the following acerbic assessment: “Well he won’t work, but he can sure talk–maybe he ought to be a preacher.”

The end of 2001 is already here and you can just make out 2002 beginning to peek around the corner. This is the last column of 2001, Arthur C. Clarke is still hanging out in Sri Lanka, no trip to Mars planned yet and I am hugely disappointed. Oh well, we do have a space station, just not on the scale that Sir Arthur envisioned about 30 years ago.
Looking back over this year of which many history books will be written, all of us were witnesses to events that kept CNN and it’s rival stations hopping from story to story. No excuse for boredom this year, none at all.

randallh writes "This weekend there will be bed races dowtown and a bicycle race will start out on Highway 287 at Lake Halbert. At the Corsicana Daily Sun there will be a chilli cookoff going on. Randy Blue and the Full House Band will have lots of boot scooting music so come on down to Corsicana, Texas for the yearly Derrick Days. You will be glad that you did."

Out on the Vernon farm Saturday was chore day and allowance day. We did the chores in the morning, and when we were finished, my Dad gave us our allowance, $0.25 each to the oldest three of the Vernon kids. The cash was burning a hole in our pockets, so away we went, on our mile and a half walk west into Kerens.
Such excitement! Our plans were set and invariable–a trip to the Kerens Movie Theater, and then afterwards a few treats and a walk back home. The movie theater was on the west side of the block farthest north on the main street of Kerens, directly across the street from Newsome’s Grocery.

We can give thanks to men like Lloyd Huffman, Bill Dosser, and Robert Herod that keep us informed during these storms. The Corsicana weather radar can be viewed on Northland Cable TV channel 3."

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #94 Harry Potter vs Frodo Baggins December 10th, 2001
|
|
The controversy is still raging. I have heard arguments on both sides and points are still being made daily stating which one is the best and which will prevail over the long run in the annals of history. The Kerens Literary Club needs to make a statement on this and establish their position before this escalates into a full-scale worldwide war.
Is it Harry Potter or is it Frodo Baggins? Where does Bilbo place? Is it “The Sorcerer’s Stone” or is it “The Lord of the Rings”? Those are the real questions.
