Kerens old-timers, driving around town, see things in memory that others do not—the Kerens Hotel, which stood back of the Kerens Theater on the northwest corner of that block; Reese’s Lumberyard, which stood on the now-vacant block of Colket immediately south of the railroad, on the west side of the street; and of course the old grammar school that marked the south end of Colket Street--the place where a fleet of yellow school buses assembled at the end of every school day for over fifty years. There were other landmarks as well, stores in the fire-ravaged section of downtown, the school gymnasium, and the beige brick high school building--a landmark I still remember so well that I could take you on a verbal walking tour of the entire premises. In our hearts, in our minds, in our memories, we can visit there together one day, but just now I am thinking of another landmark to tell you about—the old tabernacle.

randyghughes21 writes "I saw a wonderful movie, A View From The Top." It starred Gwyneth Paltrow as Donna Jensen, a girl who had big dreams to fly with a major airline. She realized her dreams and they came true. Mike Myers from "Austin Powers" was in the movie. So was Candace Bergen who played Sally Weston along with Kelly Preston and Christina Applegate. Donna Jensen got to fly to major cities around the world. Paris, France was one of the major cities.. dream big and you can make your dreams come true."

What About All This Stuff?
How on earth did I accumulate all this stuff? I wonder as I sit here, how many others have asked themselves that same question. I sometimes wonder why we don’t all realize that the accumulation is growing and growing as it is doing so. Why does there have to come a day of reckoning when we realize that something must be done about all this! Were we just irrational before the day of reckoning?
Goodwill? “Heavens to Betsy, no!“, my grandmother used to say at such a time. I’ve never before now in my life had a truck come to my house to pick up my cast offs. Well, of course not! I was too busy going to the Goodwill and Salvation Army to gather their treasures for myself to take home and gloat over and treasure in disbelief that the things cost so little.

randyghughes21 writes "In Hewitt, Texas which is a suburb of Waco, Texas there is a really nice HEB plus grocery store. It not only has the current food & grocery items, but also has some special departments. You can listen to a music cd before you buy it or purchase a digital flatscreen television. It also has other special services that other HEB stores don't carry. The store is very large and roomy. I wish sometime in the future that Corsicana might get one of these fine stores in our community."

randyghughes21 writes "Not long ago I saw a wonderful movie on the Oxygen Network, the Buddy Holly Story. It told the life of the late 1950s rock star Buddy Holly who was born in Lubbock, Texas. He had many great hits like "Fade Away" and "Raining in My Heart." The Big Bopper was also on tour with Buddy as well as Richie Valens who sang "La Bamba." The late country singer Waylon Jennings was a good friend of Buddys. Even though he is no longer around, his beautiful music lives on for all his fans. By the way, Gary Busey played Buddy in the movie."

Thinking of the way it was in Kerens back in the 1950s, I always find it pleasant to remember how people always seemed so willing to help out their friends and neighbors. Folks just seemed to spring into action when they heard of a person who was having a hard time. As one example, people would always show up to bring food to the home of a person who had lost a relative. Few of us were very well off, but it seemed like just about everyone was more than willing to share what little they had.

Business: New Collin Street Bakery in Waco
|
|
randyghughes21 writes "If you have been out to our Collin Street Bakery retail store on Highway 287, there is a new Collin Street Bakery in Bellmead just off Interstate 35 in Waco, Texas. They employ several people. The Waco store sells cookies, cakes, pies, sandwiches, and soft drinks for the lunch time crowd in Waco. I'm sure the Waco location will be very busy this Christmas of 2009 selling the world famous Collin Street fruitcake which is shipped worldwide every Christmas season."

randyghughes21 writes "It looks like they have the framework up for the new Denny's Restaurant that hopefully will be open by late summer. Also, the new Office Depot just opened this Spring. It is a very nice store indeed. I was hoping Corsicana in the future could get a really nice Cinema on Highway 287. That would be icing on the cake."

First let’s talk about the Chicago world fairs. There were two of them. The first, in 1893, was the Columbian Exhibition along the shores of Lake Michigan on the eastern edge of the burgeoning city of Chicago. The Columbian Exhibition, following in the wake of the much noted and highly successful World Fair in Paris, France, was a magnificent retrospective on the origins, history, government, people, and culture of the United States. Its architecture was stately and classical, and its focus was upon the first hundred years of this nation—it sought to explain this nation’s greatness in terms of its past.

Foxtales: COMING UNHINGED IN TIME-MOMENTARILY FORGETTING MY OWN BEINGNESS.
|
|
Thoughts and feelings are the hardest of all things to write about. Here goes the effort!
This account of a simple and singular incident at age seven will barely qualify as a short story; because there isn’t enough to it all. It consists of walking from our garage through the kitchen door, past mother and the dining room, to the living room…all the while pondering very deep thoughts way above the head of an almost seven year old child. I asked my mother an unanswerable question while she was beating the batter of my birthday cake.(A different color layer for each year of my life.)
The question was, “Mother, how long has the world been here?” This was quite a question for a mother rhythmically hand beating the batter for my cake. Her answer was almost instant, “Forever…and ever… and ever… saying forever at every down-stroke of the beater. She kept on beating the batter without missing a single beat with her whisk.

Foxtales: NOTHING EVER STAYS THE SAME… NOTHING IS FOREVER
|
|
If things did last forever, we would never have to buy a new car. How boring! I get tired of things, and need a change now and then. Just think how many people that would put out of work?
There is a positive side to things staying the same. I can think of several, and they are almost all, housework related. The dishes would stay washed, the beds would stay made, the floors would stay vacuumed, and kid’s faces would stay washed. The list is endless, but those are my favorites.
One that would be particularly nice, would be if we, alone, never grew older; but that really wouldn’t work either...because we would look as young as our kids, and some of them would not be pleased. Sometimes it’s nice to have a few fantasies, if only to smooth out the rough edges of life’s hardships. I love this Stay Young Thing!

The junior class won a 'Rockin' Pizza Party' with a total raised of, $422.00. The seniors brought up second with $209.00, then the sophomores $121.00, and the freshmen with $84.00. It is always preferable to visit home with a friend. Your parents will
not be pleased with this plan, because they want you all to themselves and
because in the presence of your friend, they will have to act like mature
human beings.
The worst kind of friend to take home is a girl, because in that case,
there is the potential that your parents will lose you not just for the
duration of the visit but forever. The worst kind of girl to take home is one
of a different religion: Not only will you be lost to your parents forever but
you will be lost to a woman who is immune to their religious/moral arguments
and whose example will irretrievably corrupt you.
Let's say you've fallen in love with just such a girl and would like
to take her home for the holidays. You are aware of your parents' xenophobic
response to anyone of a different religion. How to prepare them for the shock?
Simple. Call them up shortly before your visit and tell them that you
have gotten quite serious about somebody who is of a different religion, a
different race and the same sex. Tell them you have already invited this
person to meet them. Give the information a moment to sink in and then
remark that you were only kidding, that your lover is merely of a different
religion. They will be so relieved they will welcome her with open arms.
