randallh writes "If you live in Corsicana, Texas or Navarro County and have a police scanner, you can pick up the local weather forecast for Corsicana by going to 162.525. That is the local weather channel in times of severe weather in our area. Or you can go to the local Radio Shack store on West Seventh and buy a weatherband radio. They come in handy in times of severe storms in our area."

randallh writes "Out on Interstate Highway 45 at the highway 287 interchange, not this summer but next year maybe, a new water theme park could be in the works for that part of town behind the Corsicana Inn Motel. Along with that would be a major hotel convention center. That would be great along with the new Chilis Restaurant that will open this summer bringing more new jobs to this area. "

David McCullough is one of the eminent historians of our time and he wrote a good one here. The first half of this book is maybe the most fascinating biography I have ever read. The latter half dulls down a little bit, but it does well in wrapping up the story and the life of one of our greatest presidents.
Truman really was an everyman’s blue collar type worker and President in that he said what he was thinking and played very little with the double talking professional politicians in big government. Accordingly he was one of those fellows that some people really liked (those that appreciated straight talk and honesty) and then there were some who really hated him (those that did not like having to face the truth or anyone tell them the truth). When Truman did not like you, there was no real challenge in figuring this out.

Foxtales: A Stroll Down Memory Lane: Suzie and Me
|
|
Column by Sandra Simmons Fox
It was not under the best of circumstances that I saw my favorite cousin, Susie. We were both in Kerens for the funeral of Suzanne’s Mother, and my Aunt (Hazel Mayo.) It was only the second time I had seen Suzie, since my wedding in 1956.
During a Mayo reunion I saw her about six years ago, and Don took pictures of Uncle Hardy, Suzanne and I. Those pictures have become really special to me. Uncle Hardy is the last one still living, from the Sid Mayo children. Suzie hugged my neck, and said ,"You look just like your mother." I carried a picture in my purse of "Suzie and me" when we were little girls, hoping to get the chance to show it to her. When she did see it, she smiled, and said something very nice about my hair being wavy and hers being straight when we both were kids. "Suz" always knew just the right thing to say."

randallh writes "There will be two new gated home communities in Corsicana. One will be on the Country Club Road, the other near Collins Middle School and North 26th Street. The one on Dobbins road will be called Dobbins Road Crossing. It will be a gated community as well with a jogging trail and gazebo and I'm sure a community pool. More new homes hopefully will bring new jobs to the Corsicana - Navarro County area ."

Novel: Life of Pi by Yann Martel
|
|
Published: 2001; Pages: 326; Rating: Excellent
When you first see the title of this book, you think it must be some mathematical story with an endless set of non-repeating numbers, but it is not. Nothing mathematical about this book at all. The name “Pi” comes from the main character’s name, an Indian boy, by the name of Piscine. Pi is just his nickname.
Typically I do not like books by foreign writers with a foreign setting, but this one sort of broke the mold and after starting off a little slow, turned into an excellent page turner that had a wind blowing you right to the very end. It was different, no doubt about it.

In this modern day world, we have become accustomed to highly efficient communications. Carrying a cellular telephone, you are literally connected to the world. There are also message services, beepers, and FAX, and if all else fails you can send an e-mail message.
Communications were not quite so easy when my family lived out on the old Goforth place in Elm Flat. When we first moved there, there was no electricity and no telephone service, and during the winter time when the dirt roads turned to mud, you couldn’t even get a letter delivered to your mailbox or drive a car into Kerens. You could get into town on a horse even in the worst weather, but that alternative that was saved for real emergencies.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #98 Game Night at the Alumni Center January 13th, 2002

Competitive battles were being waged on Main Street Saturday night. Some of the tools of these struggles included Dominos and Scrabble Tiles as people searched for an opening to exploit any potential weakness in their opponent’s strategy. The marks on the score cards mounted during the night.
This was a new event put on by KESA with a fun and games Saturday night of friendly matches. If you missed it, keep an eye out for the next one. Robert Selph and KESA Vice-President Murlene Lilly prepared some world-class chili that disappeared during the evening. In other words, it was good. I do not think I have ever met anyone that enjoys cooking more than Robert does. He just plain enjoys it.

In the olden days, there was no e-mail, but people still managed to communicate. Using e-mail is fast and easy, assuming of course that you have access to a computer and know how to operate it. I think e-mail is just great. You can get messages out to a business, a friend, or a relative quickly and inexpensively. With the convenience of e-mail, you may even communicate more frequently than before the days of computers. I love e-mail, and would never want to give it up. Yet, sometimes I wonder . . .

Business: New Sirloin Stockade Restaurant
|
|
randallh writes "I have heard that the new Sirloin Stockade restaurant has opened on West Seventh. Also I hear that the Corsicana Area Chamber of Commerce will have public meetings in June to talk about new business coming to our fair city. That is excellent news for Corsicana and Navarro county residents. Corsicana is on the move. I hope for more good news this summer and new employment for our community."
