randallh writes "In the very near future, Mother Francis Medical of Tyler will soon have a state of the art medical hospital within the city limits of Corsicana. As you know, Medical Arts Clinic was taken over by the Mother Francis Hospital system out of Tyler, the Rose City. That is great news for our area and community."

To Wal-Mart or to Super Wal-Mart? Now after reading that sentence, here is a real question for you. Is the first statement derived from a quotation from Clarence Darrow, or would it be William Shakespeare? Think about it.
What in the world does that have to do with Wal-Mart? Well it’s like this. I am getting pink face irritated with the on again and off again debacle of building a Super Wal-Mart in Corsicana. Specifically, on the highway between Corsicana and Kerens. Everybody that has heard this rumor at least ten times during the last year raise your hand.

History: Report From Ground Zero by Dennis Smith

I looked for quite a while on Amazon.Com for a comprehensive book covering the events of September 11th, 2001. It has been a few years now since this world changing event and I had not read a single book covering the details yet. You would think it would be difficult to choose between the many titles available, but I discovered that an overall narrative of the event was actually difficult to find. Believe it or not. Lots of books were listed about individual pieces of that day and surrounding events, but not the one overall ‘Complete 9/11” book.

Business: New Home Depot in Bellmead, Texas
|
|
randallh writes "In the future in Bellmead, Texas, which is in the Waco city limits, there will be a new Home Depot store in at the corner of Loop 340 and Interstate 35. It will employ 150 new people. It should be open by the New Year of 2006. That is good news for the area. Walmart has a Supercenter in that area also. Walmart's Sam's Club is over there too as well as a new HEB grocery store that opened not too long ago."

randallh writes "Local schools will be starting up in August, so when you are driving thru a school zone, slow down in your car or truck. It's the law. Also if you are behind a school bus remember to stop. Kids will be getting off the bus to go to school. Practice traffic safety."

If you are a guy, do you like sleeping with two other guys right up next to you? What if they had been sweating under layers of clothing all day, smelled nasty, and it was freezing with a screaming wind outside. Lets see, what else. Well, there were water bottles in our sleeping bags with us to keep the water from freezing, and the supper we had just cooked ourselves was down right horrible. Freeze dried lasagna boiled in hot water. You can guess what that led to during the night. Not a lot of perfume being passed around.

Foxtales: DARRELL MABRY....LITTLE DARLIN
|
|
Column by Sandra Simmons Fox
Darrell Mabry...Little Darling! I mentioned in a past column, about the responses I’ve had from people who live all over Texas (never under estimate the power of the news media!) I suppose it also proves that people really do read the entire TRIBUNE. I believe that most people like to look back over their own pasts and stroll now and then ‘DOWN THEIR OWN MEMORY LANE’. I hope some of my remembering may have triggered some of yours. It gives me a warm feeling to think so...humor me .OK?...I’m into my mid-life…and I’m fragile!

Local News: Looking For Members of the Banks Family
|
|
Anonymous writes "First of all, congratulations on a wonderful website.
In April of this year, my aunt by marriage, Freddie Slate Wilson, passed away. (Her obituary is listed on your website.) I was given the family pictures that belonged to my uncle, W. W. Wilson. Along with those, I also received pictures that were mostly of the Banks family, an old family from the Kerens and/or Bazette area. Freddie's mother was Jenny Banks. Her father was Fred Slate. Some of these pictures are very, very old. Going back almost to when photographs were first made. I would like to locate a member of the Banks family who would like to have these pictures. I don't want to give them to just anyone, but to someone who would treasure and value them and share them with other members of their family. Anyone who knows any of the Banks family can contact me at my e-mail address, by phone or write me at the address listed at the bottom of this notice. I work out of town part of the time, so if you call and I am not here, just leave a message, please. Perhaps we can make arrangements so that you can see these pictures. Thank you so much for any help that you can give me.

randallh writes "With the Chilis restaurant open this month, there should be more growth in that area. The new Corsicana National Bank should start on their new bank branch soon. Also Holiday Inn Express motel should be building this summer. "

randallh writes "Up here in north Texas there was a great Fourth of July fireworks show. It was spectacular in the community of Lake Dallas. Lots of people turned out for this event. What a great way to end this special holiday."

Column by Sandra Simmons Fox
Where do I start ? To say that Dodds Lake was the big deal place to go swimming, in the fifties, is a good place to begin. I was involved in many large gatherings there. The one that stands out from the rest, involved mothers, daughters and siblings. We had one heck of an all day outing! The picture I remember most vividly is one of all the women wearing their swimsuits, all lined up in a row. There was also a cute one with mother and Melba Rea. Melba had on her swimsuit, mother had on street clothes, with a big hat. I dare not send it in. Trust me it was a precious picture.

randallh writes "When you are out on the area lakes this Fourth of July weekend, remember to wear your life jackets. Also go to fire works shows instead of setting them off yourself. Many people have been hurt not using them right. Also the ground has been very dry this summer. So have a safe but happy Fourth of July. Remember our men and women overseas in Iraq who fight for our country so we can enjoy this special holiday."

Local News: New Football Stadium for Corsicana High School
|
|
randallh writes "Next fall of 2006 should see the Corsicana Tigers football team playing in a brand new stadium directly across from the high school on farm to market road 744. It would be a multi-use stadium with ten thousand seats and it would bring in revenue for the CISD where playoff football games could be played for local area teams. I'm very glad for my hometown, Corsicana, Texas. Go Tigers"

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #101 Long's Peak Boulder Field February 4th, 2002
|
|
One eye had been open all night long when the alarm went off at 4:00 a.m. in the morning. Long’s Peak was waiting and it was time to double-check our equipment. Time to put on multiple layers of insulated clothing and make sure our feet were thoroughly wrapped. The past had taught me it was the feet that go first, but Mother Nature was not going to fool me twice.
Our plan was to make the boulder field at the base of the Keyhole by afternoon, pitch a tent and begin the quest to summit the mountain the next morning. We were cocky the first day knowing this would be the easy part, or maybe we were just hiding our tension. The danger would not arrive until the next day when we walked through the Keyhole. Or so we thought.

randallh writes "On the Fourth of July, drive over to the town of Kerens, Texas. They put on a great Fourth of July fireworks display. The town is located on east Highway 31 just east of Corsicana. Don't miss this fireworks show."
