Local News: Vote in Travel Writing Contest
Notices NorthTexas writes "Kerens granddaughter/great granddaughter (lineage of Kathleen Jennings, Fred & Kittie Jennings, Will and Cora Coates) needs your online vote to become a finalist in a travel writing contest. First prize is $10,000 and a trip to NYC.

Please take a few minutes to vote by following steps below. Your vote really matters as I'm currently #14 and only the top 10 become finalists. I remember that Kerens folks were the greatest about helping one another. Please vote!

1. Go to Trazzler Sign-Up Page: www.trazzler.com/signup
to avoid signing in via Facebook. It is not necessary to join Facebook to vote.

2. Fill in requested information (email address etc) and click "CONTINUE".

3. Click on "Start Exploring" button.

4. Welcome page will appear: Scroll down and click on "NYCGO Writing Contest" (right side of screen, near bottom).

5. List of Contest Entries appears (titles, numbers, photos). If "Savoring Serenity at the Luminous Lotus Temple in Delhi" is not on the first page, then keep clicking "NEXT" to find the page with it.

6. When "Savoring Serenity at the Luminous Lotus Temple in Delhi" by Sandra Foster Lovas is in the list, click on it.

7. Picture of Bahai temple and Sandra's narrative will appear, click on "Add to Wishlist" to vote.

8. Click on "Logout".

9. Later, Trazzler will send you an email asking to
confirm your email address.

Local News: Walmart Gets a Makeover
News randyghughes21 writes "If you have been to our Corsicana Superwalmart, you may notice some major changes. Our local supercenter is getting a major redo. It is more roomy and larger. The Pharmacy has been moved for a short time so they can redo it. All parts of the Walmart will look totally different over the next few months. I like the new look. It's totally hot."

Tales from Elm Flat: A Trip to Daniel Lake
Elm Flat Just about anyone living around Kerens has heard of Daniel Lake, but a few basic facts are worth stating. As to location, the lake is on the Navarro County side of the Trinity River right across the river from the old TP & L plant in Trinidad. Coming from Kerens and heading east across the Trinity River bridge, you can sometimes spot the lake, maybe three-quarters a mile south, if you look sharply to your right. I don’t necessarily recommend doing this if you are the one driving the car!

Local News: New Retail or Business maybe for Corsicana Crossing
News randyghughes21 writes "Where Home Depot now sits just off Main Street, could sometime in the future be home to a Seven Million Business that could possibly employ up to 51 workers. The road that runs by Home Depot and the other retail businesses could be extended to house other retail spots in the future. That is a fast grownig area off Highway 287 andIinterstate 45. I would like to see a Best Buy in that area. Waxahachie and Waco both have these fine stores in their area."

Kerens Tribune Columns The excitement was so intense who could possibly sleep? Slowly over the days momentum had been building as the months, then weeks, then days crawled by and were diligently marked off the calendar. Would the day ever arrive was the question until finally it became time for the light of dawn to burst out on this enormous event. An event of such magnitude that history would unfold and be recorded right before our eyes.

Business: Dennys
News randyghughes21 writes "Hopefully it won't be too long before the new Dennys Restaurant will be open. That is a good place to eat. I would like to see a really nice Cinema out on Highway 287. Hopefully that area of town will see more growth. Now if they could start on the long delayed highway bypass that would be good. I also would like too see an Heb Plus store in Corsicana. They have a really nice one in Waco, Texas."

Volunteers Needed to Help Nursing Home Residents

July 13, 2009 - The North Central Texas Council of Governments’ (NCTCOG) Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program has immediate need for warm-hearted volunteers to help elderly and disabled residents of nursing and assisted living facilities in Kerens and Corsicana. Ombudsmen advocate for residents’ rights including, but not limited to, dependable and consistent care and an environment that promotes the residents’ dignity, self-determination, and communication.

Volunteer Ombudsmen also receive and investigate complaints made by, or on behalf of, residents or their families. Since many residents do not receive regular visitors or have close relatives, it may be difficult for them to enlist advocates. Volunteer Ombudsmen serve as advocates for all residents, connecting them to their broader communities, affirming their rights, and assisting them in resolving concerns."

Tales from Elm Flat: When Daddy Shot the Goose
Elm Flat The old Thompson place was our home when I was about four years old. It was a big wooden two-story house right in the middle of nowhere out in Elm Flat. We were almost a mile off the main road, and even that was just a graded dirt road, and in the winter it was an ungraded mud road complete with deep ruts. The house came complete with a water well and outhouse—no pump for the well, no electricity, no telephone. Our nearest neighbors, about one-half mile south of us, were the Lancasters (Denver and Marvene and their children).

The front door of the Thompson place looked east right into the back of the 100-acre Houston place, a fertile blackland place that Daddy rented several years later and farmed for Mr. Houston. The back of the Houston place was low lying, and always collected water during the winter time, looked in fact like a small lake right across the road from our house. As such, it was a perfect landing place for Canadian geese when they made their annual pilgrimage from Canada and the northern United States to enjoy their usual southern winter vacation.

Foxtales: MY AUNT GIGGS
Foxtales It hasn’t been all that easy sensing, knowing, and seeing things some others do not;that is, others who aren’t Gypsy Artists or Extremely Eccentric Creators, or even those who possess the gifts of clairvoyance, clairaudience, and just plain finely-tuned intuition. I have always thought of these things as Divinely Given, and my own God-Given Gifts of the Spirit; although, sometimes I have to do more explaining than I have the expertise for doing. Mother always thought that most of what I said was purely my imagination. Giggs was always entertained by my stories; therefore, she was always a Safe Haven for me. A safe place to fall.

I’d tell my dramatic, colorful dreams to my parents each morning over breakfast, just knowing they would be excited. They weren't! Mother didn’t know how to easily explain my glimpses straight into the essence of reality and beyond, and more especially in living color. She always thought I was making it all up when expressing my exciting dreams. She had never had even one dream in color, so no wonder she didn't believe me. As I look back over my life, I can see all that now. "Poor Mommie", she didn't understand me at all.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #180
The March of Technology
August 18th, 2003
Kerens Tribune Columns I am sitting here reading over some documentation on this latest high tech new age toy I just got and am wondering how in the world I ever did without it. First one I have ever possessed and already it is ingrained in my day to day life to the point where I take it for granted even though it did not even exist a little over a year ago. In fact, now that I have one of them, I am seriously considering getting two. A pair is bound to be twice as much fun.

As you wander through the years, this type of technical leap comes along every now and then. Usually by surprise too, or maybe sneaky would be a better word. Maybe you read about it coming for a while and dismiss having any use for it until for some reason or another you get one in your hands. You use it and then do what I did. You start wandering how you ever did without it.

News: Are You Ready for the Digital TV Switchover?
News randyghughes21 writes "On June 12th, all the Dallas and Fort. Worth TV stations will stop broadcasting the analog TV signal and broadcast only in the digital mode. If you have an antenna based TV, you will have to have a digital converter box or a set with a digital tuner built in. The picture and sound are much better and clearer. If you have cable TV or satellite TV, you do not have to do a thing. These systems are already setup for the transition to the new broadcast system."
