Hazel Louis “Granny” Phelps passed away December 15th, 2005 at the Heritage Oaks Retirement Village.
Graveside services were held December 17th at the Oakwood Cemetery.
She was born April 14th, 1921 to Mr. and Mrs. Grady Poarch. She was a homemaker who loved cooking, shopping, going dancing, and always had a juicy story to tell. Your favorite treat, the arm of her recliner that you never out grew, and the coolest front porch was always waiting when you visited. Our life’s tapestry is woven with wonderful memories of the best mother and granny you could ever have.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #117 Career Day at Kerens High School May 25th, 2002
|
|
I walk into the doors of this large building that I have not visited for many years and it seems so eerily vacant. The hallways are quiet where I expected noise to be bouncing off the walls. Memories are rolling around in my head of times gone by and I wonder just how much the decades have weathered the rooms I used to know so well.
Two people are standing alone in conversation and one turns towards me with a smile I recognize in an instant. The feeling of being lost speeds away into the distance as Dixie Bell asks me what in the world I am doing at Kerens High School during the beginning of a school day. I could have closed my eyes at that moment and imagined Jack Bell hollering at me to cut my sideburns or he was going to get the paddle after me. The kids were already in their classrooms, settled down, and contrary to what you might hear on the news in other cities, there is order in this school system.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #115 Game Night at the Alumni Center May 12th, 2002
|
|
The words from Ted Price were: “The Ice Cream and Pecan Pie at the Double D Café is the best I ever had.” I could tell while watching him sit beside his brother Perry in the Alumni Center Saturday night that he was thinking about going back for more too. Talk about supporting your hometown, these two brothers came all the way from their homes in Houston to play some dominoes at the Alumni Center Game Night. Not only did they throw those Bones around on the table, but they threw in a few tales of Kerens as well. If only the walls of this building could record these stories, what character they would possess as they become further ingrained in the historical culture of Kerens. Memories are being built on this foundation in the same manner as the sidewalk of commemorative bricks continues to grow.

randallh writes "If you have a chance drive thru Community Park to see the beautiful Christmas lights. They are beautiful at night. Dennis Thornberg and friends put up these lights every year at Christmas time. Thank these local people for their hard work each year. The Christmas lights are very pretty."

soulbrother writes "There's a study on how to send hugs over the internet. It seems that there's a need for human to have affection at any cost, even to the point of sending hugs over the internet. To faciliate the venture a study is being undertaken to use chickens as test dummies. It's as crazy as polyester pants causing cancer in lab mice. What's a mice doing wearing pants any way? It would seem that they would eat off before they would have a chance. This news came from NPR news out of Pasadena, California November 28, 2005."

“Silicon Valley” is the mythical name it goes by, but I could possibly come up with a few other names to describe the heartland of new technology companies in the U.S.A. Located just South of San Francisco in the Bay area is where you will find these dot com people. The ones who live by the keyboard and die by the next startup company that pushes them out of business.
I just returned from spending a few days in Silicon Valley visiting with SUN Microsystems and want to describe a place that is almost like a foreign country when you contrast it with the heartland of Rural America, namely Kerens, Texas. SUN is a company started by a couple of college kids at the University of California, Berkeley that mushroomed into one of the largest provider of UNIX based compute servers in the world.

Column by Sandra Simmons Fox
One day I was thinking about my large collection of egg replicas in all sizes. That day, when I wasn’t even pondering about where this egg fetish had it’s beginning, the answer came to me as clear as a bell, as I got a flash-back of a story I’ve heard a gazillion times. It’s a childhood tale my kinfolks have told over and over again because it was an odd thing for a toddler to do. They probably thought I was retarded. lol I’m not 100% sure if I remember it completely on my own, or just remember people telling the story.

Business: New Collin Street Bakery on 132 Acre Retail Site
|
|
randallh writes "In the future, Collin Street Bakery will have a new retail store on the 132 acre retail site not far from Chilis Restaurant. They will also have a full scale bakery in the new 8000 square foot building where people can take out the Collin Street Bakery products. That is very good news. I hope to hear about more retail stores for that growing retail site. I hope to hear more by the end of 2006."

Anonymous writes "I just saw your posting about dogcatradio. It might be of interest to know they weren't the first ones to come up with the concept for broadcasting to animals. There is a radio station for cats called Cat Galaxy out there which has existed since 2001. Their web site addy is www.catgalaxymedia.com.
As a fan of felines I hope many out there will give it a listen. My cats and I love it. We checked out dogcatradio though and all it seems that they did was copy the cat station. Not very original thinking if you ask me."

randallh writes "In the very near future we all should hear about a Major retailer on the 132 acre retail site along with some major restaurants? I will keep you informed."

cmsalch writes "I'm wondering if anybody saw this, because I can't find anyone else who did except the people in the car with me. Last night (11/14/05), I was traveling between Kilgore and Tyler on Hwy. 31. This was about 8:15 or so. The sky suddenly lit up to a kind of medium blue--not as bright as the daytime sky, but close. I looked up and there was this bright white flash shooting across the sky, kind of like certain fireworks. It was too high to be any danger, so I wasn't worried. I know that the Leonid meteor shower is supposed to be going on right now, and that's what I'm assuming it is, even though it was way brighter than any meteorite I have ever seen and throwing off sparks to boot. My question (besides 'did anybody else see it') is, does anyone have any idea of what else it might be? Then again, maybe it wasn't visible in Kerens at all...
