You know, I really did not think this column would go on for more than a year or two at the most, but we just passed the three-year mark and have strolled right into the fourth year of Kerens.Com in the Kerens Tribune. Actually, the four year mark passed by so fast I accidentally missed it. That mark happened with the column last week when St. Valentine got caught fooling around outside of the law and unfortunately was parted with his head.

randyghughes writes "The Athens, Texas YMCA, which opened in the Cain Center in 1974, will be closing soon. That is a real shame. They had a lot of good programs for people of Henderson County and East Texas. They will be missed."

Around Kerens, whenever you hear someone speaking of the river, they mean the Trinity River–the geographic and legal boundary between Navarro County to the west and Henderson County to the east. Farming bottom land means trying to grow crops on the floodplain of the Trinity River.
Farming bottom land is neither an easy nor risk-free way to make a living. The land is rich because of the alluvial deposits of the river. However, sometimes after you have planted–investing time, labor, crop seed, tractor hours, and money into the effort–the river floods, laying waste to all your efforts! The land is generally weedy, and requires lots of plowing and hoeing to clean up the rows after you have planted. Instead of row crops, some river bottom owners or leasers prefer to use their fields as pasture land. There is a similar problem–after you have invested money in developing a good stand of coastal bermuda grass, the river can come along and flood the place and kill all the grass. In other words, having bottom land to contend with is sort of a mixed blessing!

randyghughes writes "I drove by Gillfillans Hardware the other day on West Seventh and saw a realty sign in front of this business. Could it be a new retail store like Walgreens coming in? Guess we will have to wait and see."

betty writes "At long last , work has begun in earnest on the new library for the Kerens area. After a ground breaking last month, the contractor, Hays Construction Co, began work on the foundation. Presently the foundation has been poured, and work on framing has begun. The building should be finished in December or early January.
We will have six public computers with high speed internet access, pleasant surroundings for reading periodicals or checking out books, and a meeting room that will be available for classes, small meetings, or other activities. Exhibit space will be in the foyer for displays of local history or interests.
We would love to hear your suggestions for activities at our library and have you come in for a visit with us now or in the new building.
Don't forget the annual Cotton Harvest Festival is October 20. All proceeds benefit the library. "

The Emperor was getting awful mad. Once more his army must be sent to the borders of Rome and once more the homeland must be defended. “First I need more men!” thought Claudius and thus a notice was sent throughout the Empire; “Uncle Emperor Wants You.” Although he did not have a red, white, and blue top hat, he did possess a crown of gold obtained most certainly through honest toil and sweat. No doubt about it.
It was not long before old Claud realized there was a problem. Not many men were lining up to participate in this glorious endeavor and he could not understand why. They were only going to be traveling for a year or two searching for more barbarians to butcher. They might die during the march to the wastelands, but it was no more than a fifty-fifty chance.

randyghughes writes "There will be a new Dollar General store on West Second Avenue just west of 15th Street. It should be open sometime next year. Also there seems to be some work going on at the former Lester Easley Grocery store. Jim Roby bought the store not long ago and then it closed a few months ago. I will let you know when i hear what this former store will be?"

My younger days were spent on the farm, several different farms, in fact. Our family owned the 127-acre family farm east of Kerens, in part inherited from Grandma and Grandpa Vernon, but Dad also rented several different pieces of land in every compass direction from Kerens. The most productive farm land for raising cotton was the 100-acre black land Houston place out in Elm Flat, west of Kerens and south of Hwy 31.

It’s so cold and gloomy on this Friday night, January 27th in the year 1967. I am in my parents ’65 Ford heading east across the old narrow two-lane Trinity River bridge heading towards the land of the Malakoff Tigers. One of those Tigerettes is waiting for me in that cross-river town and this teenager is ready for a big weekend to begin. The radio is turned up too loud and the Buckingham’s are blaring out a rendition of “Don’t You Care.” Almost similar to a 21st century rap song, but maybe not too similar. The music suddenly stops and a voice over the radio plainly announces, “Apollo I astronauts Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee, and Ed White have died by fire today on the launch pad.”

Movies: Legally Blonde 2 - The Movie
|
|
randyghughes writes "I saw a wonderful funny movie, "Legally Blonde 2." It was both funny and heart warming. It stars Reese Witherspoon and Sally Fields. It's about changing the system and winning sometimes in the big city of our nation's capital. Elle Woods had some road blocks, but she overcame her problems. You go girl. A wonderful movie to see with your loved ones. LeAnn Rimes sings the title song, We Can." I would highly recommend this movie to anyone .who likes to dream big dreams."

Business: New Growth at Cedar Creek Lake
|
|
randyghughes writes "Well, dirt is flying at Cedar Creek Lake with new businesses being built at Gun Barrel City on Cedar Creek Lake. A new CVS Pharmacy is being built. Also, a new Fuddruckers restaurant will be built and a La Quinta Inn. A new cinema, AArons Rent to Own, and a new shopping center called Heritage Cove will be built along with several new businesses. That area has really grown over the past few years as these new businesses make Cedar Creek Lake home."

Growing up on the Vernon farm, my brothers and sisters and I had few luxuries of any kind. Most of our toys were homemade. My brothers and I made slingshots using forked tree limbs and cut-out strips of rubber from worn-out inner tubes. My sisters used their sewing skills to make clothing for their dolls, and Dad exercised his carpentry skills to create doll houses for them.
Outside play included baseball, touch football, tree climbing, and capture the flag. Fishing, playing down in the pasture, and swimming in the stock tank were other of our activities. In the summer, evening was a good time for play because the work day was over and the temperature was cooler.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #151 The Closing of Super K-Mart January 26th, 2003
|
|
I know some of you have seen the beginning of this monumental ground breaking event, but for those who have not, listen up. The shovels have been put into the ground and the long anticipated construction of the Corsicana Super-Walmart has begun. I would say right on schedule, but its not. It still bites me right in the rear end that it has taken the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce this long to get the job done. Better late than never. As I said in a previous column some time ago, Corsicana will have the newest Super Wal-Mart in the area, no doubt about it.

I do a lot of reading and studying and writing but mostly I think about the future and the present time we live in. Some may call this article treasonous, some may call it bold and daring, others well might just say it is foolish. My self, I hope it is inspiring and touches those who read it.
I have for a long while been thinking that Texas is a great state and great place to live. We have great farmers and ranchers who feed us. We have cities that provide us with the clothes and stores where we can get anything we want. Down on the gulf coast we have all the oil refinaries to make all the gas we will ever need and the Gulf fishermen catch all the seafood we could ever eat. We have some of the biggest military bases in the world right here in Texas. And I guarantee those Texas boys know how to fight."

randyghughes writes "In this Ellis county town of Ennis, Texas, there is new business growth. A new hotel is going up on Highway 45. Also it looks like a new strip shopping center is going in. Already there is a Starbucks Coffee shop andn a new bank is in the process of being built. Along further up the street there is a CVS Pharmacy retail store with a new Walgreens retail store across the street. I'm sure more new business is headed to this fair city."
