And Now You Do

3:28, Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

“Weeeeeeee” “Weeeeeee” He was squealing like the brakes on a runaway locomotive about to run off the tracks. The pig came barreling out of the door sprinting like he had just come out of the blocks in the Olympics. Snout down, ears laid back, legs stretched, he was heading hell for leather to the highway and nobody was catching him.
Once upon a time these two little kids were in the car with their father who was taking them on a trip to the shadowy lands of East Texas. It does not take long for little ones to get bored and this trip was getting that way when suddenly father decides to stop. The gas gauge was a little low and right here was a gas station on the side of the highway in this little bitty town. At least it was little bitty in the eyes of the children having lived in the big city of Corsicana for as long as they could remember, which was not very long.

randyghughes writes "If you are going to the State Fair of Texas this weekend in Dallas, you may notice the big guy with the ten gallon western hat, shirt, and jeans. He was once the big Santa Claus in Kerens, Texas. He welcomed many a visitor to this nice town in eastern Navarro County along east highway 31. By the way, the State Fair starts this Friday and ends on October 22nd. Gee, I can smell those Fletcher corny dogs now."

southerncrossranch writes "Tommy, may I say what a great article you wrote. It brought tears to these old eyes. I sure thought you were talking about George W. Bush, but instead you were talking about Abe Lincoln.
First, I am not a Lincoln fan as my pastor is, and I humbly disagree with him about the man and the myth. To him he is a hero. To me he was an invader and did nothing to call off the dogs of war when he could have. Instead he called out 75,000 troops to squash the rebels in the cotton states.
As Robert E. Lee said to the Secretary of War when he was offered command of the forces of the United States, he could not believe he would ever live to see the day a sitting President of the United States would raise troops to invade his own country."

There were two kinds of boys in Kerens High School during the decades of the fifties and the sixties—those who earned football letter jackets and those who did not. I fit in the last category until my senior year, and that year our coach “Little Tommy” Phillips got me in enough games to earn the coveted letter and the jacket it was attached to.
I went out for football all four years during the period when “Little” Tommy Phillips was coach. For those who did not know him, the word “little” really meant quite the opposite, as Coach Phillips stood somewhere around six foot six—and there was little on his frame except muscle. Playing under Coach Phillips reminds one a little of the famed Aggie football seasons under Bear Bryant. Coach Phillips believed above all in conditioning, and starting in the heat of August, he put us through three drills a day—morning, noon, and night. Wind sprints, dummy tackling, calisthenics, scrimmage with pads on—we really did it all.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #156 The President of the United States March 3rd, 2003
|
|
He has only been in the Presidential Office such a short time serving his first term as President of the United States, and already it seems like the whole world is looking at him. His own country is assailing him on all sides and criticisms come from everywhere. “You are a war monger!”
When he picks up the newspaper in the mornings he sees caricatures of himself and his seemingly backwoods country style. The Liberal newspapers do so enjoy seeing this conservative Republican portrayed as a country bumpkin and they milk it for everything it is worth. Reporters are having a field day making jokes about him. And those Democrats, man the things they can come up with. What would we do without our Liberals entertaining us by talking out of both sides of their mouth morning, noon, and night.

southerncrossranch writes "Folks, I need your help. I have started a tradition in Kerens at the Cotton Harvest Festival of donating a young yearling up to a two year old to raffle off for the Kerens Public Library fund. I have had some sickness and have not been able to get to the sale barn in Elkhart to buy a cheap horse. I may be able to go before October 20th, but I won't make any promises. So if anyone has any animals they would not mind donating to the raffle, I am sure the ladies at the library would not mind making more then one kind of raffle ticket. We could make some money off horses or cattle or goats, so you ranchers and farmers dig deep and see if you can help them out.
This new library is a great thing for our kids and our community. Call me and I will be glad to haul them or do what ever it takes to get then there on October 20th. 2007.
God Bless you all

randyghughes writes "KXAS NBC Channel 5 is now broadcasting in High Defintion, but there is a cheaper way to pick up the new digital TV signals. There are video cassette recorders that have new digital TV tuners built into these machines. All of the Dallas Fort-Worth TV stations are now broadcasting the new signals. If your outside TV antenna is fairly new, you can pick up the new signals with your current TV and the videocasette recorders that have the new digital TV tuners built in."

I just logged on to Kerens.Com to read some articles and was very nicely surprised to see Tommy Darby's article on Stonewall Jackson,
and the movie "Gods And Generals" which came out back in 2003. I was one of the first people in line to see this movie when it opened at the dollar movie and yes I was too cheap to go see it when it cost eight dollars at the mega theatres in Dallas."

My generation, which came of age in the decade of the 1950s, had different dating options than teen-agers today. For athletics, Kerens teen-agers mostly went to football games and basketball games, and there were regular rites of passage for girls and boys in such athletic-related activities as band and drill team . . . and of course the highlight of the social season was the Football Banquet.
On a day-to-day basis, a guy might meet his girl friend down at Hilliard’s Drugstore for a fountain coke, often shared between the two because loose change was always a scarce commodity. McClung’s Drugstore was another meeting place, and the featured attractions for me at McClung’s were always the ice cream malts—whether to have chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry was the pressing question of the day!

Sitting still as a stone in the saddle, Thomas raised his eyes to the sky ignoring the fire and struggle surrounding him on all sides. With his eyes wide open glaring upward with the intense strength of his faith, he prayed to his Lord to give him strength this day. He prayed with a deep resounding conviction knowing his Lord would listen to his prayer. Then he closed his eyes, opened them slowly again, and lowered his gaze back to his men. He issued his orders in the tone of command that creates a black silence. “We must kill them all.” His deep blue eyes stared fiercely from beneath the bill of his old worn hat. “Stand where you are and defend our land. If we fall today in defeat, we are all doomed.”

randyghughes writes "If you have driven West Seventh Street in Corsicana, in a new building across from Gilfallans Hardware there is a sign that says Wingstop Coming Soon. It just so happens that Wingstop Chicken Wings has over 60 Wingstop Wings chicken restaurants in the Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex. I'm looking forward to their grand opening."

I grew up in a small town between Terrell and Greenville called Quinlan. Well, actually I grew up about fifteen miles outside town near Lake Tawakoni, but the school system was in Quinlan so that was where I attended school.
I still remember the first day I ever saw Quinlan. It was so small you could pass through it in about 2 minutes with out really ever having to slow down too much. They had a few old run down buildings and a Dairy Queen and one store to shop at and not much else. Of course this was in the 1970's."

The Vernon kids had to cross Indian Creek to get to school in Kerens and to return home in the afternoon. You had three routes back and forth, involving three different ways to cross the creek. From the Vernon place you could go into Kerens by taking the Old City Lake Road, a dirt road that ran in front of our house, down the hill to the creek, and then into Kerens. Obviously, you could come back home the same way. On school days when the road was not too muddy, we usually went this way.

randyghughes writes "Well I'm sure all of us are waiting for cooler weather and a nip in the air. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year when it rains a little bit more and the leaves start changing on the trees. Also I look forward to the State Fair of Texas in Big D to see the animals, the people, and the auto show, both the domestic and import cars. I also start thinking about the holidays and being with family & friends."
