For the third time in the Kerens Alumni Center, .I got to see a remarkable continuing family reunion. This is that annual “Speed” family gathering that occurs right here in the homeland of their ancestors in the little town of Kerens, Texas. I was one of those “Speed Bumps” in attendance, being one of the people that are not related to this wonderful family at all.
Speaking of the “Bump” people, I also had the chance to run into one of our newest residents of Kerens returning after a long absence from his hometown, Mr. Ty Whorton. I believe most everyone has heard the “Whorton” name before in Kerens. Graduating from Kerens High with the Class of 1950, here he is retired and right back at home having just moved into the house that James and Terry Orn just vacated. He was there visiting with one of his friends that happened to be a relative of the Speed’s.

Business: New Growth Maybe for Corsicana?
|
|
rrandyghughes writes "I just read in last Sunday's Corsicana Daily Sun newspaper that several retail companys could call Corsicana home if Corsicana could clean up its act. I don't mean to belittle our town, but there are some spots in town that could be cleaned up. The old buildings that are rusted need to be torn down or replaced. The empty buildings that are near our local highways, maybe something could be done. A lot of our local people shop out of town. Our community is losing over a billon dollars to other areas like Ennis, Waxahachie, and Waco. "

It seems to me most of the information that comes out of Kerens is by word of mouth. And by the time it reaches the upteenth person, the story is ten times diffrent then when it started. Of course that is the way all small towns are. A good story travels faster then lighting.
I was in the Dollar General store the other night and overheard a lady talking about local politics and she said she was going to run for Mayor of Kerens. So I told her I was also thinking about running for a school board position. But then again, I have no idea when the school board meets or even when local elections are held. And if it is city elections, I can't vote any way living out side city limits. All I can vote for is county and school board and like I said, I have no idea when these things are held anyway."

johnmccormick writes "I have a story that begins about 40 years ago. I was in a nightclub and met this really nice girl. We hit it off immediately and we planned to get together in the near future. She gave me her class ring and phone number and told me to call her for a date. I was careless and lost her phone number with her name and could not call her and I had her ring.
I felt devastated as I had lost my ring earlier. I put her ring in my drawer and time passed. A lot of time. I was looking in an old jewelry box and found her ring and called Balfour (The manufacturer of the ring) and they did not have records that went that far back. I am trying my best to return this ring to the nice lady that gave it to me. I am not a stalker and will gladly give it to a third party that I know will make sure that she gets it. Maybe the current principle of Kerens High School where she graduated. The initials inside the ring are JLC and the year she graduated was 1967. I still remember that she reminded me of the actress Jill Claberg from Silver Streak. If any one can get in touch with her and tell her to have the principal e-mail me I will gladly return the ring with my best wishes and apology for taking so long to return it.
My name is John McCormick and my e-mail address is onejohnmccormick@yahoo.com."

A friend sent me one of those internet stories about barns. The writing was about beautiful, aged, and unpainted barn wood. The author analogized the aged beauty of such wood to the lives and countenances of people who likewise take on a new kind of beauty from the years of seasoning and weathering they have experienced. I enjoyed the written barn item, and it put me in mind of some of the barns of my life.
I will tell you of two of those barns. These are the two barns that have meaning in my life, one which remains standing today, the other long consigned to the dustbin of Vernon family history!

With some trepidation, with some anticipation, and with some mild preparation, we witnessed the third annual Easter Sunday Buffet Luncheon at the Kerens Alumni Center this year. It went off rather well too with the Association making at least enough to fund another $1,000 scholarship. Now if everyone had eaten at Kentucky Fried Chicken instead, well I guess Colonel Sanders can always find something to do with another big bill like that one.

Local News: Help Library Replace Outdated Equipment by Donating Old Cell Phones
|
|
ajohnson writes "Seven Points, Texas---December 14, 2007---Many homes in America have at least one or two old cell phones lying in a drawer or closet somewhere, doing nothing but collecting dust. Most people are unaware that cell phones such as these can be put to good use; they can be employed by organizations and businesses that use them for fundraising. One such organization is the Library at Cedar Creek Lake."

The most enjoyable part about writing these little stories about life in and around Kerens is hearing from people who have read and enjoyed them. Hearing from others is interesting, partly because we often remember things from the past together, refreshing and comparing memories. Sometimes our memories are exactly the same, but in other instances I learn that things were not exactly as I may have recalled them.

My father fell last week in the kitchen of his home and broke not only his hip but also his arm in two places. Surgery for this was from 3:00 p.m. until about 8:00 p.m. at night by an overworked orthopedic surgeon at Navarro Regional Hospital. This is so tough on the elderly and this one is going to be a long period of rehabilitation. Tough on him and tough on Mama too. That broken arm is going to be a real problem with getting him up on his feet. He does have a brand new hip though. Thanks to all the people that sent flowers and to his Kerens Classmates that have been checking up on him. The Class of 1946 has to be one of the best groups that ever grew up in Kerens.

JoAnne: TURKEYS ARE THE DUMBEST BIRDS WALKING

So why give thanks for them?
Column by JoAnne Tuttle
On turkey day each year Emery Tuttle recalls his time as a turkey farmer. Tuttle explained, “If left out in the rain, turkeys will turn their heads straight up at the rain and drown themselves. But on the other hand if a skunk gets in amongst them at night, the next morning you will find the turkeys all roosting in the trees. They have sense enough to leave the scene of a crime.”
Tuttle, a resident of Cedar Creek Lake, lives with his wife at 147 Esquire Estates Road, Mabank, Texas. In his recently published book, “And The Angels Sing,” 87 year old Tuttle chronicles the days he spent raising 450 turkeys."

Texas is a big state, and if you stick around long enough you will hear lots of over-sized tales about the state. Everybody in Texas is related to Sam Houston or Stephen F. Austin. Everyone is related to someone who took a stand at the Alamo. Everybody’s grandfather or great-grandfather or great uncle was a Texas Ranger. Texas has the hottest weather in the United States. Texas has
the most beautiful women in the United States. Someone once told me that the longest drive across any state is the trip from Texarkana to El Paso. Person that told me that, I stumped them though, “Why on earth,” I asked, “would anyone want to drive from Texarkana to El Paso?” I have yet to receive a satisfactory answer to that question!

It might be worth reflecting that this group was originally created
back in September of 1987 and has exchanged over 1200 messages. The
original announcement for the group called for an all inclusive
discussion ranging from the writings of Gibson and Vinge and movies
like Bladerunner to real world things like Brands' description of the
work being done at the MIT Media Lab. It was meant as a haven for
people with vision of this scope. If you want to create a haven for
people with narrower visions, feel free. But I feel sad for anyone
who thinks that alt.cyberpunk is such a monstrous group that it is in
dire need of being subdivided. Heaven help them if they ever start
reading comp.arch or rec.arts.sf-lovers.
