27:1, Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

rrandyghughes writes "This Spring, why not Travel down Highway 287 South of Corsicana and visit beautiful Richland Chambers Lake. A nice Sunday drive where you can see why so many people call this beautiful 44 thousand acre lake home. It is the third largest lake within the state of Texas. You may also see the beautiful Blubonnet flowers that dot this lake and many businesses call this place home. Both on the North side of the lake and the South side. I think it's a beautiful place just to relax and dream."

THE NEW YEAR -- THE LAND OF BEGINNING AGAIN
by JoAnne Tuttle
Oh, where is that land,
That land of beginning again?
We long to set forth on the voyage
To find that land,
Leaving all past mistakes behind,
Reviving our sinking hearts.
Where peace and contentment we'll find
Like never before we've known.

rrandyghughes writes "Just a few months ago, Office Depot put up a new building on the 132 acre site where Home Depot calls home. Gander Mountain Outdoor Retail store, Chilis, and Collin Street Bakery retail store also call this area home. Office Depot is still unclear when they plan to open the new retail store. It could be several more months. They plan to employ hopefully up to 32 people or more. Surely we will learn something more over the coming months."

She took the candy right out of my mouth, no doubt about it. Priscilla Gorman was determined not to let me have that candy. I had walked by that shiny white wholesome looking home made divinity earlier in the day and she pointed it out to me. “Better make a bid on that one.” Cocking an eyebrow and bending over to take a close look, I knew I had to have it. But she was setting me up. Or maybe Betty Ivey, the maker of this basket of candy, was setting us all up. At one point in the auction Tinker Ivey jumped up and made it a three figure bid on this divinity raising it to a price almost as high as the bid on a home made antique quilt on another table. I could not believe it. I was hungry too.

Local News: Proposed Power Plant to cause Health Ailments
|
|
grejos writes "The city of Corsicana is currently in negotiation with the proposed Elk Creek Power Plant's owners, LS Power Development-- subsidiary of Dynergy, for one of two gas-fired plants to be built in Richland, TX. The proposed plant will spew toxins into the air that are fully reported, in documents available from the Environmental Protection Agency, to cause aggravation of respiratory and heart ailments, cause the increased decay of buildings, and contribute significantly to acid rain. Sulfur Oxides/acids, Nitric Oxides/acids, and Carbon Monoxides released by the proposed plant will also change the chemical makeup of soil, causing decreased crop yields, and severely impact the health of livestock."

Column by Dr. Ivan R. Vernon
It is a testament to the peacefulness and quiet routine of life in Kerens and Elm Flat that a minor bus accident should be considered news. The accident involving the Elm Flat bus in April 1960 would never have made the front page of the Dallas Morning News even on a quiet news day. Indeed, there is doubt whether it even made an inside page of the Corsicana Daily Sun at the time it happened, although I confess that I have not checked the newspaper archives to verify this point. Undoubtedly, it would have been reported in the Kerens Tribune, and I am left wondering if the Tribune was still under the distinguished editorship of Gilbert White, or whether it had already passed on to the Kittleys. Anyway, I would just like to make the point that there are some who care what happens around Kerens, even things that happened almost 50 years ago . . . and gentle reader, I am one who is committed to recording the crucial and important facts of our home town before they are totally lost to posterity.

rrandyghughes writes "I guess all of us are looking to warmer weather with the Trees and Flowers budding out. Spring is my Favorite time of the year. With the Texas Bluebonnet flowers along the Texas Highways and Byways and also Derrick Days rolls around this time of the year later during the last part of April. Brad Haynie and the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce do a wonderful job of getting Corsicana and Navarro county ready for this wonderful event that honors Corsicana's oil rich history. I'm glad that it happens every Spring. "

JoAnne: Celebrating Valentine's Day

MY VALENTINE
By Emery Tuttle
After being single too long back in 1971, each Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night, I went dancing at either Wintergarden Ballroom in Dallas or Guys and Dolls Ballroom in Fort Worth. During the three years I was single I didn’t have a monogamous relationship with anyone until, one night at “Guys and Dolls,” I got JoAnne in a “Paul Jones” dance."

rrandyghughes writes "Across from Gilfillan's Hardware in Corsicana, sits the New Wingstop Chicken Wings Restaurant. They already have the sign up but the restaurant has not opened yet. Surely it won't be too long before it opens. They have yummy chicken wings."

Don Pascal has planted his shoes right here where I am today while he was on vacation last year with his pretty wife Jean Ann. They were probably as wide-eyed as I was this morning at 9:00 a.m. when I finally parked and stepped out of an airport rent car. Wide-eyed at all of the sounds in the air, and wide-eyed at all of the immense vehicles parked nearby.
Right after I returned from the solemn battlefields of Gettysburg last year I had the opportunity to speak with Don about all the history I had just waded through and what it felt like to stand literally between the pages of a history book. I remember telling him how surprised I was with the Northerners for not allowing any Confederates to be buried at Gettysburg (those bad Yankees). It does feel different when you are around something that has only existed in classroom pictures or in books your entire existence and suddenly you see it come to life right before your eyes.

rrandyghughes writes "This past Sunday I drove by where Wingstop will have a New Restaurant. Their chicken wings are yummy. They have several Wingstops in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Hopefully it won't be too long before they open here. Also, Office Depot, up from the Home Depot retail store on the 132 acre retail site, will have the new Office Depot up and running soon. By the way, Office Depot is building a new store in Waco, Texas at Central Texas Market Place on Interstate 35 next to Best Buy Electronics."

Local News: New Taco Bell Restaurant on Highway 287
|
|
rrandyghughes writes "In the not too distant future there will be a new Taco Bell Restaurant on Highway 287. That is good news. Already there is a Wendys and Chilis on the 132 acre retail site. Hopefully there will be more good eating places on that major highway. I was also hopeing Corsicana could see a major new cinema out there with stadium seating and dolby digital sound. That would be fantastic. I'm hoping we will hear good news in 2008 for our fair city."

JoAnne: It'S More Blessed To Give
|
|
jo writes "
By JoAnne Tuttle
Question: Which are you – a Giver or a Getter?
Usually, we are both. At times we are the unselfish Giver; and at other times we are the self-serving Getter or receiver of the gifts. We have just past the season of gifts – both giving and getting. All of us have heard “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” What does that mean?
Well, when I was a child, I didn’t understand that saying at all. I couldn’t believe that “giving” could ever be better than “getting.” What child believes that? After all, we all like to get gifts. I remember those times as Christmas approached, all I could think about was what I wanted to “get” for Christmas. Have you ever done that? Of course you have. We all make a long list of all the things we want to “get” from Santa."

Local News: Cotton Patch Buys Former Humbert's Hickory House Lot
|
|
rrandyghughes writes "As you all know, The former Humbert's Hickory House restaurant was torn down yesterday. Cotton Patch has no plans at the present time to build on the lot. I was hoping some new business could go in there. Subway Sandwich Shop will have a new restaurant on West Seventh Ave February 1st. The new Subway restaurant will be larger and hold more customers. It will be next to Kentucky Fried Chicken. I'm hoping Corsicana will see new eating places to replace the ones we have lost."

Local News: Former Hickory House Restaurant Torn Down
|
|
rrandyghughes writes "I guess all of us at one time or the other has eaten at Humbert's Hickory House. Well, today I drove by the former Humberts and it was being torn down by a bulldozer. That is a shame. I have eaten at that restaurant several times.
Up the street on West Seventh Ave on the left side of the street, PaPa John's Pizza has closed for good. I hope 2008 will bring new retail and restaurants to our fair city."
