“All Aboard” was the signal that departure time had arrived. All the bags were stowed away and time to make a trip down south to the hallowed ground of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Back a few months ago in March we had decided to take another family vacation to Alamo country where we had visited a few years ago, but this time we decided to make it a little more interesting. Instead of heading to Waco and south down Interstate 35, we decided we would get there by heading north instead. How do you do this?

rrandyghughes writes "If you long for the good old days, there is a radio station in Dallas with 50s, 60s, and 70s music.
Ron Chapman is back on the radio airwaves at Platinum 96.7 with the music you grew up listening to. Ron Chapman hosted the longtime Dallas TV music show, Sumpn Else, from a TV studio at Dallas Northpark shopping center. He then went on KVIL 103.7 and did a radio show with longtime co host Suzy Humphries and then to KLUV 98.7. Give the new station a listen."

When I grew up on the farm, we always had a clothesline. There was really no other choice. For part of my growing up years, electric dryers had not yet been invented, or if they had been invented, they were not stocked for sale by Bain’s, Carroll’s, or Massey’s hardware stores. Even after they were invented and offered for sale, our family could not afford one–and anyway, what would be the sense of paying for an appliance and electricity to run it when sunshine was so abundantly available in our part of central Texas!

A good friend of mine I first met in Sunday School years ago when her twins were only a year old, and are now forty-two has four children in all: a daughter, the twins, and lastly, my “Cherished Godson,”, Blair, who is her youngest child. and calls me "MiMi just as my own four grandchildren do. Blair is So Special to me! (I’m using his middle name, since this is going on the internet.)

Local News: Why is Corsicana Losing Out to Other Cities?
|
|
rrandyghughes writes "A few months ago we had a retail guy and former Corsicana resident telling us about some of the sore spots that keep us from moving forward. Some of the entry ways into town have old buildings, old cars, & overgrown weeds. I don't mean to be a critic, but other towns like Ennis and Waxahachie already have in place the tax abatement monies to draw new retail and businesses into their fair cities. If we want to progress, we have to move forwards, not backwards. Only then can we hope to compete with these other towns."

Movies: Sex and the City - The Movie
|
|
rrandyghughes writes "If you are a fan of the TV Series, Sex and the City, the big screen version opened this past Friday at the local cinema. With Charlotte, Samantha, Carrie, and Miranda, it was two and a half hours of pure fun and drama as these ladies from the Big Apple, New York have the adventures of their lives.
Does Carrie finally marry Big? You will have to go see the movie. Out now in wide release, I enjoyed this wonderful movie about four stong independent women.
You Go Girl."

THE GODDESS OF LIBERTY
IN THE RBBB CIRCUS”
By JoAnne Tuttle
Celebrating Mother’s Day this past week reminded me of my relationship with my mother-in-law, Clara Margaret Tuttle (1885-1985). And I recalled a story my husband told me about his mother when she was young.
In 1971, when my husband and I married, my mother-in-law, Clara Tuttle, was eighty-six years old; however, she was as spry as 'Hannah Montana.' She was a delightful mother-in-law and dearly loved and respected. Her home was in Wisconsin where winters are very severe. So, shortly after Christmas each year she would come by train to Texas to stay with us until the end of May when she would return to Wisconsin."

The name is “Atkins For Life.” For a do-it-yourself diet book, this was not bad at all. Not exactly a bestseller with Tom Clancy assassins or Stephen King monsters, but it was good reading. I have read some others such as the “Fit For Life" book, the "Eat To Win" book, and a few other odds and ends. These traditional diet books typically tell you to eat alfalfa sprouts and to prepare your own fruit juices and to buy only organically grown vegetables. No fat in anything. Also you are suppose to eat raw fish and run five miles each morning before your breakfast of grapefruit slices.

rrandyghughes writes "This May, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones is in the fourth and final picture of this well loved classic, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This should be one of his best movies. The Man with the brown fedora rides again along with his famous bull whip. Try to see this wonderful action packed movie which is a thrill a minute. Don't miss it. See it when it comes to your local cinema this May."

Local News: A Thank You To Everyone For Voting For Me
|
|
southerncrossranch writes "Well folks, I am proud to say this contest is over and I have lost so in a way I feel I have won because 42 of you came out to vote for me. And for a new comer in your area, that is not too bad a first time out.
So thank you to each and every one who voted for me this time. I am honored that we ran a clean campaign and there is always next year. I do intend to run again for you and your children so lets get behind our school board and give them all the support we can. And next year my name will once again be on the ballot, so thank you one and all for a job well done.
David C. Hubbard"

southerncrossranch writes "I was looking at a notice that was online dated on my birthday December 28' 2007 from Mr. John McCormick asking if anyone knew of a lady who graduated in 1967 from Kerens High School.
I went to the library and looked up the 1967 Seniors and came across Jennifer Clay. She was the only girl in the class with the initials that were inside the ring. The only other name I recognized was Kay Bain's. This is Bobby Bain's cousin. So if they were seniors together, maybe she will know the where abouts of the former Jennifer Clay. It did not have the middle name listed, but inside the ring was the letters JLC, so i assume it is this girl. And if anyone knows the Clay family, please let them know this man has their daughter's ring.
His email is: onejohnmccormick@yahoo.com"

southerncrossranch writes "One of my favorite times is getting up at 5:00 a.m. when the wife leaves for Dallas. The quiet still of morning reminds me of my youth when my grandfather would wake me for school. And I would rush to get dressed to catch the bus for our ride through the country and then back to town. Ole number 16 was my bus number and it was a rag tag ole bus kept together with bailing wire and spit.
It was driven by Jack Booher who was also the middle school principal. Jack was one of the few people in the world that I could truly look up to. A firebrand of a guy with his military crew cut and short stocky nature and wide grin that made you feel safe and secure that this ole air force gunny was in charge."

The end of May 2003 and at the end of this particular month you can count on a big gathering in Kerens. It is graduation night where all of these kids who have waltzed through four years of High School make their first steps into the real world. I always thought High School was easier than the real world.

Column by Dr. Ivan R. Vernon
My brothers and sisters and I made money for our school clothes by picking cotton in the fall. My brothers and I tried to make enough money to buy two or three pairs of blue jeans, half a dozen tee shirts, some long-sleeved shirts to wear to school, a pair of tennis shoes, and a pair of dress shoes to wear to church. We also hoped to have enough to buy some socks, a belt, and maybe even a blue jean jacket. If we had plenty of money, we would buy extras such as slacks and dress shirts for Sunday.
