For 3000 years, until 1883, hemp was the world\'s largest agricultural crop, from which the majority of fabric, soap, paper, medicines, and oils were produced.

I suppose children in every family grow up hearing stories from their parents. Perhaps this is the way people keep alive their own memories and pass them along to their offspring. My own father had a wide repertoire of stories—of how he mended fences with his dad, our grandfather, of how Grandpa Vernon preferred mules and for many years refused to buy a tractor, of the trip Dad took in the summer of 1933 with a group of classmates in an old converted schoolbus to the Chicago World Fair, of the highjinks he and his high school pals pulled in Kerens during their senior year—naughtiness that even today more than a decade after my father’s passing had best not be told in fulsome detail lest it incriminate some who are still living!

What time is it? We all ask that question several times every day. Remember the old adage: Today was tomorrow, yesterday? It is according to where you are in that trilogy that determines what “time” is for you. If for you the time was yesterday – then it’s too late. If for you the time is tomorrow – then it’s too early. The only time we have is now – we only have today.
At birth, each of us is given a span of time; however, we are not told how long that span will be. Some of us are given more time than others. But the question for each of us is: “How do we want to spend that span of time?” Sometimes we waste our time. There are other times when we crowd our time with too much activity. But always we spend our time by our choices – some good choices and some bad choices.

Blood was everywhere. It covered my glasses and was running down my arms. Bright red blood is dripping off my elbows and splattering on the floor around my shoes. I stumble along feeling the wall and finally make it through the door into the restroom where soon the sink is shining red and the faucets are lined with red streaks.
I was in the weirdest accident at work recently and learned a few things about head wounds and the law in this day and age of tort reform, or maybe the absence of common sense when so many lawyers are around trying to find a hole in our legal system.

rrandyghughes writes "Well, it's that time of year when the State Fair of Texas Kicks off in Dallas. Big Tex will be wearing a bright yellow shirt with new bluejeans. If you remember, Big Tex for so many years greeted Christmas visitors to the nice town of Kerens, Texas. He was a very tall Santa Claus. He now is a part of the State Fair of Texas in Fair Park in dallas. The State Fair starts up September 26th. I can smell those Fletcher corny dogs now and the tasty turkey legs."

Foxtales: ( INSPIRATION FROM AN E-MAIL )
|
|
An e-mail came to me yesterday out of the blue, and I print it below:
“So glad to see you writing something again. I had become quite concerned fearing you weren't doing well. Looks like things just might be okay. I only have one grandchild, but oh what a pleasure they are. I love reading about grandchildren.”
Above is an e-mail I received yesterday. I love getting feedback when I write. Someone else called me a while ago praising my writing, so it was time to start back, I thought. I've been very ill, is the reason I haven't written in a while, but I'm back, if only for a while.

Three categories of rifle qualification in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps are marksman, sharpshooter, and expert. The marksman category means you just barely passed, and the expert category is tops . . . the best. The sharpshooter category is midway between marksman and expert. While serving in the Kerens National Guard field artillery unit, I scored at the sharpshooter level, and I held this qualification throughout three years of service in the Regular Army from September 1959 to August 1962. I never reached the esteemed expert level. My cousin L. E. (Lester) Tarkington, an army career enlisted officer, however, was an expert with the badges to prove it. L.E. was career military, and had lots of other medals as well, including six Purple Hearts, a whole host of medals of Commendation, and the much coveted Silver Star. I am giving all this information about me and my cousin L.E. as essential background to understand a Bazette hunting trip that I took many years back with my cousin.

Last year in 2002 after the column you are about to read was published, I received a phone call from my old High School history teacher, Coach James Kelley. He told me another interesting fact about this date in history, July 4th, 1826, that I did not know. I promised then I would re-publish it again next year and add this piece of great history that makes our country so proud to fly our flag. So with a few minor updates, here it is.

rrandyghughes writes "If you were a big fan of the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, the music world in Nashville has lost a great artist. Jerry Reed had many hits. "When Your Hot Your Hot," "Eastbound and Down," and many others. Jerry Reed also played the Snowman in the Smokey and The Bandit Movies.
The music world has lost a great music talent. Mr. Reed was 71 ."

rrandyghughes writes "In November, the cast of the well loved "Dallas" TV Series will return to greet their fans of the TV show. It will take place at the Southfork Ranch in Parker, Texas where the Dallas TV Show was filmed. It all happens November the 8th. Tickets have already been sold to this event. What a wonderful show. I once visited this famous ranch in North Texas. This TV show ran for several seasons.
To paraphrase a a famous blonde celeb, It Was Hot.""

jo writes "By JoAnne Tuttle
One day not long ago, I watched a tiny young girl named Rebecca as she stood before the window enjoying a sunset. She soaked it in, then took a breath and absorbed a little bit more. She collected a moment of joy by stopping for a view of God at work. She is a joy-collector. She became one by choice--not birth. Anyone can become a joy-collector if they choose to spend the moment collecting memorable joys.
We must do our best not to miss those moments of joy--for life is so short. Every day can be like a suitcase to collect our joys, little joys and big joys. We must fill each day full--full of joy memories. We collect those memories because one day we may need some of them to help us through those cold, dreary, dark and lonely days."

That bad day on the calendar was approaching fast. Next Friday was going to fall on June 13th and everybody knows that is the day Jason wakes up and terrorizes everybody in the world. Even the hockey players are afraid of each other on that dreadful day. In fact, this is an excellent spot on the calendar to just stay home and watch Disney movies. No doubt about it.
Then a few days earlier the phone rings and Robert Ivey on the other end poses the question: “Wanna make a trip to an author signing at Murder By The Book?” The last trip we made to that bookstore was a lot of fun so naturally: “Sure thing. What day are we going?”

Movies: Glenn Miller Orchestra
|
|
rrandyghughes writes "Last night I saw a wonderful movie, the Glenn Miller story. It starred Jimmy Stewart, June Allyson, and Harry Morgan. It was About Glenn Miller getting his band put together to play across our great land. If you grew up in the 1940s, you remember Glenn Miller's great hits like String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade, and Tuxedo Junction among others. Glenn Miller's orchestra also kept the American troops entertained during the war years of the 1940s.
There is a website, www.glennmillerorchestra.com. such wonderful and dreamy music."

In the decade of the 1950s and 1960s, Kerens had a really great place to get your shoes repaired--Sullivan’s Shoe Shop. Sullivan’s was a long-time institution in Kerens. It stood on the south corner of its block, across the street from the bank, on the west side of Colket—in other words, exactly where the Kerens Alumni Center now stands. I was in Sullivan’s fairly regularly because Willard Sullivan was a friend of my father’s and that is where we got our shoes repaired and bought new ones.

Foxtales: A Strong Desire.. Not To Make Anyone Feel…“Less Than”
|

Another occasion comes to mind that is about my own youngest, and very precious grandson.
Spencer and his Mom had gone to the elementary school to have lunch together one day. There was a boy sitting at their table who turned to my grandson and said, “You must be really, really rich to be wearing a Tommy Hilfiger*shirt“. Spence looked down at the shirt while gathering his thoughts about what to reply. He said, “Well, we’re not rich, in fact, we’re having financial trouble.” LOL
