Local News: Long Prairie Cemetery Association Annual Meeting

marshas writes "The Annual meeting of the Long Prairie Cemetery Association was held on July 4, 2008 and elected new officers for the year 2008-2009. Those elected were: Geral Nichols - President, Marvin Paul, Vice President, Bobbie Nichols - Secretary/Treasurer. Two new Board of Directors were also elected this year and they were George Scott and Vivian Lowe. After the business meeting a covered dish luncheon was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Ron Chapman is back on the radio airwaves at Platinum 96.7 with the music you grew up listening to. Ron Chapman hosted the longtime Dallas TV music show, Sumpn Else, from a TV studio at Dallas Northpark shopping center. He then went on KVIL 103.7 and did a radio show with longtime co host Suzy Humphries and then to KLUV 98.7. Give the new station a listen."

Local News: Why is Corsicana Losing Out to Other Cities?

rrandyghughes writes "A few months ago we had a retail guy and former Corsicana resident telling us about some of the sore spots that keep us from moving forward. Some of the entry ways into town have old buildings, old cars, & overgrown weeds. I don't mean to be a critic, but other towns like Ennis and Waxahachie already have in place the tax abatement monies to draw new retail and businesses into their fair cities. If we want to progress, we have to move forwards, not backwards. Only then can we hope to compete with these other towns."

rrandyghughes writes "In the future, Waxahachie residents will have a new place to take in a movie. Showbiz Cinemas is building a new cinema in Waxahachie, Texas. It will be a new 12 screen cinema with stadium seating and possibly Dolby Digital sound. It will be located on Broadhead Road near the intersection of Highway 287 where several retail and restaurants call home. J.C. Penneys has a store near the proposed site. The Target retail store is not far away. Waxahachie seems to be growing every time I have been up there."

Business: New Collin Street Retail Store in Waco, Texas

rrandyghughes writes "There will be a new Collins Street Bakery retail store in the Waco area of Bellmead, Texas. It will be a ten thousand square foot store like the one in Corsicana on Highway 45 and Highway 287. The new Waco store will be located on Highway 31 at the intersection of Interstate 35 in Bellmead. The new Collin Street Bakery store should be open next Fall by Thanksgiving or Christmas 2008. It will also have tasty sandwiches for the Waco lunch crowd. I'm sure they will have their yummy Collin Street Bakery fruitcakes on display."

rrandyghughes writes "In Waco, Texas, Goody's clothing store is closing their Waco store along Frankin Avenue and New Road. They are closing 17 stores in Texas and southern states to streamline their retail operations. It is still unclear if the Corsicana store at College Park Mall will be one of the 17 closed."

rrandyghughes writes "This past week, the new Office Depot Store opened In Waco, Texas at Central Texas Market Place next to Best Buy. I still don't know when our Office Depot Store will Open in Corsicana? Maybe in a few months Guess we will have to wait and see over the next few months."

rrandyghughes writes "At this time of the year in Texas, we get stormy weather. A weatherband radio is a plus. It alerts you to local weather conditions and lets you know what is happening in your area. You can find these radios at your local Walmart Supercenter or your local Radio Shack store. They come in handy in case of a severe storm."

rrandyghughes writes "This Spring, why not Travel down Highway 287 South of Corsicana and visit beautiful Richland Chambers Lake. A nice Sunday drive where you can see why so many people call this beautiful 44 thousand acre lake home. It is the third largest lake within the state of Texas. You may also see the beautiful Blubonnet flowers that dot this lake and many businesses call this place home. Both on the North side of the lake and the South side. I think it's a beautiful place just to relax and dream."

rrandyghughes writes "Just a few months ago, Office Depot put up a new building on the 132 acre site where Home Depot calls home. Gander Mountain Outdoor Retail store, Chilis, and Collin Street Bakery retail store also call this area home. Office Depot is still unclear when they plan to open the new retail store. It could be several more months. They plan to employ hopefully up to 32 people or more. Surely we will learn something more over the coming months."

Local News: Proposed Power Plant to cause Health Ailments

grejos writes "The city of Corsicana is currently in negotiation with the proposed Elk Creek Power Plant's owners, LS Power Development-- subsidiary of Dynergy, for one of two gas-fired plants to be built in Richland, TX. The proposed plant will spew toxins into the air that are fully reported, in documents available from the Environmental Protection Agency, to cause aggravation of respiratory and heart ailments, cause the increased decay of buildings, and contribute significantly to acid rain. Sulfur Oxides/acids, Nitric Oxides/acids, and Carbon Monoxides released by the proposed plant will also change the chemical makeup of soil, causing decreased crop yields, and severely impact the health of livestock."

rrandyghughes writes "I guess all of us are looking to warmer weather with the Trees and Flowers budding out. Spring is my Favorite time of the year. With the Texas Bluebonnet flowers along the Texas Highways and Byways and also Derrick Days rolls around this time of the year later during the last part of April. Brad Haynie and the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce do a wonderful job of getting Corsicana and Navarro county ready for this wonderful event that honors Corsicana's oil rich history. I'm glad that it happens every Spring. "

rrandyghughes writes "Across from Gilfillan's Hardware in Corsicana, sits the New Wingstop Chicken Wings Restaurant. They already have the sign up but the restaurant has not opened yet. Surely it won't be too long before it opens. They have yummy chicken wings."

rrandyghughes writes "This past Sunday I drove by where Wingstop will have a New Restaurant. Their chicken wings are yummy. They have several Wingstops in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Hopefully it won't be too long before they open here. Also, Office Depot, up from the Home Depot retail store on the 132 acre retail site, will have the new Office Depot up and running soon. By the way, Office Depot is building a new store in Waco, Texas at Central Texas Market Place on Interstate 35 next to Best Buy Electronics."

Local News: New Taco Bell Restaurant on Highway 287

rrandyghughes writes "In the not too distant future there will be a new Taco Bell Restaurant on Highway 287. That is good news. Already there is a Wendys and Chilis on the 132 acre retail site. Hopefully there will be more good eating places on that major highway. I was also hopeing Corsicana could see a major new cinema out there with stadium seating and dolby digital sound. That would be fantastic. I'm hoping we will hear good news in 2008 for our fair city."
