FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Volunteers Needed to Help Nursing Home Residents
July 13, 2009 - The North Central Texas Council of Governments’ (NCTCOG) Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program has immediate need for warm-hearted volunteers to help elderly and disabled residents of nursing and assisted living facilities in Kerens and Corsicana. Ombudsmen advocate for residents’ rights including, but not limited to, dependable and consistent care and an environment that promotes the residents’ dignity, self-determination, and communication.
Volunteer Ombudsmen also receive and investigate complaints made by, or on behalf of, residents or their families. Since many residents do not receive regular visitors or have close relatives, it may be difficult for them to enlist advocates. Volunteer Ombudsmen serve as advocates for all residents, connecting them to their broader communities, affirming their rights, and assisting them in resolving concerns."

News: The Truth About Truancy
|
|
larkcon writes "I have been one of the parents who received a note from the school stating my child was on the verge of being truant. I don't know how many of you have heard the news that the Dew principal also had this "save the ghetto school" attitude our principal has, and tried to run it like a prison, just like the principal here.
Well, here is what TEA has to say on truancy, the truth on truancy, and if you have received a letter, rest assured you are probably not the parent of a truant child. If you are found a parent of a truant child, sue the school.
TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED:
This letter is intended to clarify several issues relating to truancy. The letter addresses recent state legislation regarding the enforcement of compulsory attendance and the relationship of compulsory attendance to tardiness. Please share this information with members of your staff who deal with truancy."

Local News: Trying to regain contact with Delores Rogers daughter of Lena Cordell Wilkins
|
|
jyates writes "I'm trying to regain contact with Delores Rogers, daughter of Lena Cordell Wilkins of Kerens. I'm sorry to find out that Mrs. Wilkins has passed away, but the email address I had for Delores bounces back as no good and I would love to regain contact with her. Mrs. Wilkins was the grand daughter of my great great great grandfather A.L. Cordle "Cordell" to the folks around Kerens. He and Mr and Mrs. Wilkins and some Cordells are interred out at the Long Prairie cemetery south of Kerens.
If anyone knows how to contact Delores Rogers please give her my email:

Local News: A Thank You To Everyone For Voting For Me
|
|
southerncrossranch writes "Well folks, I am proud to say this contest is over and I have lost so in a way I feel I have won because 42 of you came out to vote for me. And for a new comer in your area, that is not too bad a first time out.
So thank you to each and every one who voted for me this time. I am honored that we ran a clean campaign and there is always next year. I do intend to run again for you and your children so lets get behind our school board and give them all the support we can. And next year my name will once again be on the ballot, so thank you one and all for a job well done.

southerncrossranch writes "I was looking at a notice that was online dated on my birthday December 28' 2007 from Mr. John McCormick asking if anyone knew of a lady who graduated in 1967 from Kerens High School.
I went to the library and looked up the 1967 Seniors and came across Jennifer Clay. She was the only girl in the class with the initials that were inside the ring. The only other name I recognized was Kay Bain's. This is Bobby Bain's cousin. So if they were seniors together, maybe she will know the where abouts of the former Jennifer Clay. It did not have the middle name listed, but inside the ring was the letters JLC, so i assume it is this girl. And if anyone knows the Clay family, please let them know this man has their daughter's ring.
His email is: onejohnmccormick@yahoo.com"

johnmccormick writes "I have a story that begins about 40 years ago. I was in a nightclub and met this really nice girl. We hit it off immediately and we planned to get together in the near future. She gave me her class ring and phone number and told me to call her for a date. I was careless and lost her phone number with her name and could not call her and I had her ring.
I felt devastated as I had lost my ring earlier. I put her ring in my drawer and time passed. A lot of time. I was looking in an old jewelry box and found her ring and called Balfour (The manufacturer of the ring) and they did not have records that went that far back. I am trying my best to return this ring to the nice lady that gave it to me. I am not a stalker and will gladly give it to a third party that I know will make sure that she gets it. Maybe the current principle of Kerens High School where she graduated. The initials inside the ring are JLC and the year she graduated was 1967. I still remember that she reminded me of the actress Jill Claberg from Silver Streak. If any one can get in touch with her and tell her to have the principal e-mail me I will gladly return the ring with my best wishes and apology for taking so long to return it.
My name is John McCormick and my e-mail address is onejohnmccormick@yahoo.com."

Local News: Help Library Replace Outdated Equipment by Donating Old Cell Phones
|
|
ajohnson writes "Seven Points, Texas---December 14, 2007---Many homes in America have at least one or two old cell phones lying in a drawer or closet somewhere, doing nothing but collecting dust. Most people are unaware that cell phones such as these can be put to good use; they can be employed by organizations and businesses that use them for fundraising. One such organization is the Library at Cedar Creek Lake."
|
southerncrossranch writes "Folks, I need your help. I have started a tradition in Kerens at the Cotton Harvest Festival of donating a young yearling up to a two year old to raffle off for the Kerens Public Library fund. I have had some sickness and have not been able to get to the sale barn in Elkhart to buy a cheap horse. I may be able to go before October 20th, but I won't make any promises. So if anyone has any animals they would not mind donating to the raffle, I am sure the ladies at the library would not mind making more then one kind of raffle ticket. We could make some money off horses or cattle or goats, so you ranchers and farmers dig deep and see if you can help them out.
This new library is a great thing for our kids and our community. Call me and I will be glad to haul them or do what ever it takes to get then there on October 20th. 2007.
God Bless you all
Southern Cross Ranch"

Local News: Something to Keep the Students Out of Trouble
|
|
wesley_bunch writes "I am Wesley Bunch and I'm trying to get something built in Kerens, Texas that will pretty much keep all the kids out of trouble. If we get a skate/bike park built for the kids, then they will stop skating and riding all the properties around Kerens which will bring more money to your business. Usually because when they see someone skating or something on your property, they usually don't want to stop. So me, Wesley Bunch, is going to go around the town and get a petition signed so that our town can have a skate/bmx park built to keep our community going good while it's still here."

randyghughes writes "Soon, where Latta's Western Wear called home, will be a new Mexican restaurant called La Perada and Cantina. It also was the former site of Kbobs Restaurant. I'm sure when it opens the food will be very good."
