My Grandmother
August 20th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns My grandmother died this weekend. She was the one that her family always referred to as “Mimi” and the only person I have ever known at any point in time that always had an eternal smile. None of you knew her, or knew her very well, for she was a very private person that had an attention span that encompassed her family and only her family. I don’t usually struggle with the keyboard that is in front of me now, but it is late on this night and the words are difficult to produce when you are attempting to describe someone who has been such an integral part of your life from the day of your birth.

Clive Cussler
August 12th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns One of the most unique authors of our time had a birthday recently, turned 75 years old, and deserves some mention for the many contributions he has made to best seller lists from sea to shining sea. Have you ever heard of Clive Cussler? Have you ever heard of Dirk Pitt? Both have green eyes, both are adventurers and have a love of the sea, but one is imaginary and one is real. We will come back to that point later on in this trail of words.

Football Season Is Here
August 5th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns Bobcat Football begins this week and just thinking about it brings both excitement and maybe a cramp or two down the back of my legs remembering the journey through my freshman season at Kerens High School. When two-a-days begin in August, that’s when the summer is over and the coaches just cannot wait to get their hands on you.

Time For School To Start
July 29th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns Just about time for school to start and wind down all those summer vacations and other activities. Not to think you can rest though because now it is time to ramp up all the activities involved with getting the kids ready to enter KISD. Did you ever wonder how in the world our parents or grandparents coped when there was no Wal-Mart where you could find all the many school supplies the kids are required to possess on opening day? Remember that red Big Chief writing tablet we all had to have? Lots of stuff got put under that red cover and not all of it had to do with school did it? I don’t think so.

The Big Library
July 22nd, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns The phone rang at 5:30 a.m. sharp early last Saturday morning and the voice on the other end says “Your Wakeup Call Mr. Darby.” I yawned widely, hit a switch behind me, and the big crystal chandelier hanging in the middle of the room lit up so brightly it made me blink. This was a morning I had planned for a while and my blood pressure shot straight up as I bounced out of the bed to get ready for my trip to the Park beside the Library. I could not wait and wanted to be one of the first ones in the park so I could watch the area come alive.

Internet Portals
July 16th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns You turn on your computer, hit the button that connects you to the Worldwide Internet, then bring up your browser. Hopefully it is the latest version of Internet Explorer (version 5.5 today). Now where are you at?

Well, this is your “portal” into the Internet. The gateway from where you begin your travels through the vast enormity of the online world and is also your home base to which you return if you happen to get lost. Make no mistake about it, getting lost is a common occurrence to first time adventurers who attempt to traverse the many trails of cyberspace.

Kerens Tribune Columns “Bottle” Walker. People around Kerens have the darndest nicknames don’t they? (Is “darndest” a word?) Where in the world would you get a nickname like that anyway? You might at first think it came from a bottle or brand of whiskey if you did not know any better. But nope, that’s not it. Not by a long shot.

Rural Shade
July 1st, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns Two centuries ago (was it really that long ago?) there was a place called the “Wildcat Ferry” that some of you know exactly where it stood, and some have never heard of at all. Is a “Wildcat” the same thing as a “Bobcat?” I don’t think you would want to pull the tail on either one of them but they do seem to hold a fascination with people around the Trinity River area. I wonder if in the 19th century seeing a Bobcat crossing the road at night around Rural Shade was maybe as common as seeing a rabbit running around these days. So common that no one ever thought anything about it.

KESA ''Thank You'' Dinner
June 24th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns I promise I won’t belch, but later on, well I dunno. Just got through eating a supper made up of leftovers from the Kerens Alumni Center dinner Saturday night and it reminded me of just how good that meal was. When is the last time you had some home made blackberry cobbler with the berries hand picked right here outside of Kerens? I always said Buddy Hughes could do a few things well with his hands, and here was the proof. Spine tingling good, loud hollering good, and even good enough to eat. That is what this dinner was, no doubt about it.

Mt. Elbert
June 17th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns "Blind Faith" is the headline that just appeared on the cover of a June issue of Time Magazine. This did not have anything to do with religion, but instead was related to one man's iron faith in his ability to achieve a virtually impossible goal when set right in front of his eyes. The only problem was this person had no eyes, had been blind since the age of seven, and the goal was the summit of Mt. Everest. A quest that has already resulted in the death of over 200 people "with" eyes, including the two best mountaineers in the world during a 1996 expedition. The same expedition that was chronicled in the best selling book “Into Thin Air.”

The Big Barbecue Pit
June 10th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns Those colored metal Bobcats hanging on the exterior walls of the Alumni Center, now what could look better than those cats? When I first heard Buddy Hughes and Glynn Holloway talking about the new Bobcats that were being prepared for the Alumni Center walls, the picture in my head was a little bit fuzzy. At first I though it was an interior wall hanging of some kind they were sketching out, but they both made it clear this was for the outside. I honestly don’t know which one of these guys came up with the idea, it might have been one of their wives, but somebody did it right. These cats stand out starkly against the beige walls under the green tin roof and add that extra measure of eye-catching appeal that contributes to the growing character of this facility. Driving down Main Street, it looks so different these days.

Legged Up Girl
June 3rd, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns “That girl is really legged up,” is the comment that caught my attention. I was just sitting there relaxing when those words unexpectedly came out of the person across from me, and it of course made me take a small peek out of the corner of one eye. Being married, I couldn’t use both. Now if you’re a man, wouldn’t that remark have made you just a little teeny bit curious? Don’t even try to deny it. What in the world does a “legged up” girl look like anyway? If you are a woman, you would instantly have been jealous of course and would have turned your nose straight up in the air. Kind of like Lucy used to do when Desi would sneak a look at one of his dancing cha-cha girls.

Glynn Holloway's Birthday
May 28th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns I had the opportunity to attend a surprise birthday party for a good friend of mine last week. He is one of the grand old fella’s of Kerens, married to a first class Cajun cook that makes me gain a pound every time I see her, and a classmate of my father’s at Kerens High School. The party was also held at a restaurant that is brand new in this area that we have been hearing rumors about for several months now. A double bonus! Many of you may have not had the chance or time to visit this place yet, so I wanted to tell you about it.

Good HouseKeeping
May 20th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns A few weeks ago we covered the basics of keeping your computer reasonably spot free via some basic housecleaning chores. Now we need to go one step further. As we discussed over that cup of coffee, even the biggest of the name brand computers begin to age immediately after you turn it on. As the computer ages with use, it becomes slower, it becomes more crash prone and unstable, and more clutter will continue to build in the computer attic until the foundation begins to crack.

Dr. John Beck on Main Street
May 13th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns Main Street had several cars rolling up and down it a few weeks ago and the Alumni Center was not even open for business. What was going on? Now that I think about it, seems there was a horde of vehicles with their accompanying dogs hanging out the windows, the rear end of pickup, and even trailers. With traffic like this, a new business on this street could have more than likely picked up a few customers if they were to hang a nice new sign outside the door. Don’t you think?
