Southern Cross Ranch: Home Town Blues
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Last night Katy and I traveled over to Hunt County to my High School home-coming game. This is the first time I have been back in over 20 years. We stopped in Rockwall and saw some old friends and then went on to Quinlan and watched the game until half time. I don't know what I expected. The nostaligia was ok but for the first time since my folks passed on, I felt like a fish out of water. I did not feel like I still belonged there but like a stranger. Even though I saw some old faces and patted some backs, I felt like I was alone in a sea of new faces. But the funny thing is some times I feel that way in Kerens. I have been told that if your not born and raised here you will always be an outsider. That is a shame because Katy and I try maybe too hard sometimes to fit in. Of course there are a lot of nice folks here and we have a few close friends and yes a few enemies. But I always figure that is their loss if you don't like me. So be it. "

Southern Cross Ranch: Some Things Change & Some Things Don't
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Many years ago I was on my way from Lancaster, Texas and cut across 287 and hit Interstate 45 to Highway 31. I had never been that way before. I was on my way to the Jr. College over at Athens to enroll for the first semester after I graduated high school. I had been over in Lancaster visiting my married baby sister.

As I turned down 31 and just got past Powell, the old Ford pickup I was driving quit on me. So here I was broke down in the middle of nowhere. And back then you didn't have cell phones. So I was took off walking toward Kerens when a gentleman stopped and asked if I needed a ride.

I said "Yes Sir, I surely do" and off we headed. I told him that ole black truck a ways back was mine, and I needed to get to a phone and call my grandfather to come get me. So he offered me a phone at his business but I asked him if he would just let me out at a gas station so I could get a coke and use the pay phone. So he said sure. He let me out and off he went back toward town."

Southern Cross Ranch: School Board Election
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Hello everyone as most of you know it is that time of year again. Spring is here and of course it is time for another election for the school board. I would like you all to know what a privilege it is to be able to run for the two available seats this year. And how much I appreciate anyone who is willing to put their name on a ballot and get involved.

Some of you have asked what my qualifications are for running. Well let me see. I have served my country proudly wearing a uniform. It does not matter which branch, for anyone who wears a uniform and serves is a hero in my book."

Southern Cross Ranch: The Ladies Of Kerens
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Some times I feel the need to just sit down and write and tell folks how I feel. Whether it is about myself or others. I do not consider myself a great writer or if I use the proper english or etiquette. So, I just write in the best manner one can do.

I have a lot to say about the ladies of Kerens. I think we have some of the greatest women in this area who devote time and effort to make this our home town a better place to live. Some of my favorites are the library ladies. Betty Partain and Cindy Carnagie and Dortha Phillips and Mutt (Marvell) Dorsey and all the others who devote their time to putting on the wonderful Cotton Harvest Festival and taking care of our new library."

Southern Cross Ranch: My Run-In With The Law
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Last week I was a sleep on a Wednesday morning when the doorbell rang and I hopped up and threw on a pair of shorts. Thinking it was probably a neighbor wanting to borrow something, I opened the door and there stood two individuals I did not recognize. One identified himself as a Secret Service agent and the other a Navarro County Sheriff officer. They wanted to come inside so I said, "Sure," sleepily allowing them in."

Southern Cross Ranch: Mr Boohers paddle.
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "One of my favorite times is getting up at 5:00 a.m. when the wife leaves for Dallas. The quiet still of morning reminds me of my youth when my grandfather would wake me for school. And I would rush to get dressed to catch the bus for our ride through the country and then back to town. Ole number 16 was my bus number and it was a rag tag ole bus kept together with bailing wire and spit.

It was driven by Jack Booher who was also the middle school principal. Jack was one of the few people in the world that I could truly look up to. A firebrand of a guy with his military crew cut and short stocky nature and wide grin that made you feel safe and secure that this ole air force gunny was in charge."

Southern Cross Ranch: A Lot of Crow With Some Humble Pie
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "A while back I wrote a article about who would be our next president and thinking I am some sort of political expert was dead wrong. First of all, I had John Mccain out of this thing months ago. Well ok, I was wrong, dead wrong. Here he was one footstep from the political grave yard and then the next he is one step away from the oval office. OK, so I made a mistake."

Southern Cross Ranch: MY FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR, OR IS IT?
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Well, it seems to me spring is always my favorite time of year. The grass is growing and the trees all come in to bloom. The children are soon to be out of school. The fish are biting and what more could you ask? Winter is gone and life is reappearing but wait, is this all so great?

I have hay fever and allergies, my eyes are swealing shut and I am sneezing my head off. It is time for a vacation from the dark days of winter and gas prices are too high to go anywhere or do anything. And, I have all this fence repair to do on the the ranch. Mercy will it never end. The bugs are out thick and biting every time I fire up the tractor and all these weeds, where did they come from?"

Southern Cross Ranch: Lack of Information
Southern Cross Ranch Southerncrossranch writes "

Column by Southern Cross Ranch

It seems to me most of the information that comes out of Kerens is by word of mouth. And by the time it reaches the upteenth person, the story is ten times diffrent then when it started. Of course that is the way all small towns are. A good story travels faster then lighting.

I was in the Dollar General store the other night and overheard a lady talking about local politics and she said she was going to run for Mayor of Kerens. So I told her I was also thinking about running for a school board position. But then again, I have no idea when the school board meets or even when local elections are held. And if it is city elections, I can't vote any way living out side city limits. All I can vote for is county and school board and like I said, I have no idea when these things are held anyway."

Southern Cross Ranch: Answering Tommy Darby's Presidential Article.
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Tommy, may I say what a great article you wrote. It brought tears to these old eyes. I sure thought you were talking about George W. Bush, but instead you were talking about Abe Lincoln.

First, I am not a Lincoln fan as my pastor is, and I humbly disagree with him about the man and the myth. To him he is a hero. To me he was an invader and did nothing to call off the dogs of war when he could have. Instead he called out 75,000 troops to squash the rebels in the cotton states.

As Robert E. Lee said to the Secretary of War when he was offered command of the forces of the United States, he could not believe he would ever live to see the day a sitting President of the United States would raise troops to invade his own country."

I just logged on to Kerens.Com to read some articles and was very nicely surprised to see Tommy Darby's article on Stonewall Jackson, and the movie "Gods And Generals" which came out back in 2003. I was one of the first people in line to see this movie when it opened at the dollar movie and yes I was too cheap to go see it when it cost eight dollars at the mega theatres in Dallas."

I grew up in a small town between Terrell and Greenville called Quinlan. Well, actually I grew up about fifteen miles outside town near Lake Tawakoni, but the school system was in Quinlan so that was where I attended school.

I still remember the first day I ever saw Quinlan. It was so small you could pass through it in about 2 minutes with out really ever having to slow down too much. They had a few old run down buildings and a Dairy Queen and one store to shop at and not much else. Of course this was in the 1970's."

Southern Cross Ranch: Texas Session
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "

Column by Southern Cross Ranch

I do a lot of reading and studying and writing but mostly I think about the future and the present time we live in. Some may call this article treasonous, some may call it bold and daring, others well might just say it is foolish. My self, I hope it is inspiring and touches those who read it.

I have for a long while been thinking that Texas is a great state and great place to live. We have great farmers and ranchers who feed us. We have cities that provide us with the clothes and stores where we can get anything we want. Down on the gulf coast we have all the oil refinaries to make all the gas we will ever need and the Gulf fishermen catch all the seafood we could ever eat. We have some of the biggest military bases in the world right here in Texas. And I guarantee those Texas boys know how to fight."

Southern Cross Ranch: Who to Vote for President
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "

Column by Southern Cross Ranch

Lately I have been doing some serious thinking about the future. Mostly I am worried about the state of our nation and who I will cast my vote for in 2008 for President. Now I have made up my mind who I will not vote for.

First thing, let me say I will not, cannot, no how vote for Guliani. He is not a Christian, has too much love for unmoral issues like abortion, is far left of my moral beliefs, and he is a Yankee. A big no no for me."

Southern Cross Ranch: Got Gossip It Hurts
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "

Column by Southern Cross Ranch

This past week, I got a phone call from somebody who I see at church but who hardly ever speaks to me or my wife. So I was a bit surprised at them even calling me. The convesation, to say the least, depressed me right from the start and was about two people I care about as friends and members of my church. I will not go into the details of what was said and that I and my wife were being brought into the middle of this vileness and it was to say the least. vile. I simply told them if you have something to say to these two people, then you should have the guts to say it to their face."
