The Election of a Mayor
May 6th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns I started off this week covering a topic in this column of a completely different nature, but right in the middle of it had to put it in the can for some point in the future. Why is that? Well, when you get right down to it, what could possibly be more interesting right here in Kerens, Texas than the city election for Mayor last week? My mind kept wandering off track back to this subject until I finally just gave up and instructed my keyboard to change lanes. Oh well.

Cleaning Your Computer
April 29th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns We are right in the middle of Spring and what is it you are bound by tradition to accomplish this time of year? Spring cleaning, that’s it! Now we could speak of brooms and mops, dustpans and vacuum cleaners, but nope; all we need right here is a nicely oiled keyboard and a house cleaning we will go. Our objective will be to send the dust flying from those vents around your computer that are normally used for airflow and cooling.

The Speed Family Reunion
April 22nd, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns One thing important to all of us is family, and one thing that can be an immensely rewarding experience is to participate in a family reunion. For those who wandered down Main Street in Kerens this past weekend and saw all of the cars parked downtown, that’s what it was. A truly large-scale family reunion that I have never seen choreographed better, and held in a facility of course that could not have been better suited for holding this type of an extravaganza.

Easter Sunday at the Alumni Center
April 16th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns I did not see the Easter Bunny hopping down Main Street last weekend, but I did see a big tall man wearing an official Chef’s hat with “KCT” embroidered on it. What in the world does that represent? Oh, and he was also wearing a major league size shirt with long sleeves and a Bobcat on it. The hungry looking Bobcat was also wearing a Chef’s hat. What was all that about? Actually, I think Robert Selph looked right at home in that outfit. By the way, somebody displayed some real talent making the Chef’s apparel and I think her last name might have been Stovall. Just a guess.

SUN Chief Science Officer
April 8th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns This week one of the major players on the leading edge of dot com technology strolled through Texas and I was lucky enough to be in his audience. The Chief Technology Officer of Sun Microsystems, Greg Papadopoulos, volunteered to speak on the future of Internet Technology to a group of Texas Instruments engineers and it was a very forward looking event. In fact, it was so forward looking I fell out of my chair twice, and it wasn’t from falling asleep.

Patsy Kelly's Surprise Party
April 1st, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns The Alumni Center was hitting on all cylinders this past weekend while doing a shakeout run in preparation for Easter. This time the event was not advertised because it was a “SURPRISE” in every sense of the word. What was the surprise? Well, it was the culmination of “Project PATSY” begun a few weeks ago by a man I refer to as the “Coach” in Kerens. After all of these years when James Kelley has not been a coach, why does this title persist down through the ages? I have an answer, but that’s later.

Internet Home Financing
March 25th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns I just concluded an exercise this past week in home mortgage re-financing as the result of inspiration from a midnight viewing of the Science Fiction channel. Don’t you watch that weird channel every night? Well, most cow and trail hands do anyway.

Now, what in the world would Science Fiction have to do with home mortgages? More than you might think at first glance. Many nights I will work into the wee hours of the morning sitting in front of this monitor and will have the television on just to provide some noise in the background. It gets scary late at night when it’s too quiet. On this particular night there were the usual assortment of strange shows on the Sci-Fi channel that seemed to be running together without end. There were the usual odd and end monsters tromping around making grunting noises and casually munching on women. You know, those women that always fall down while running away from creatures with big pointed teeth. Ever notice that?

The Passing of Robert Ludlum
March 18th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns There may not be but a hand full of people who noticed this news last week, but are you aware that one of the great authors of our time passed away just a few days ago? Looking out in the audience, it is hardly a surprise that very few hands are raised as there were only a few wisps of words given to his death in exchange for the many thousands he gave to his readers. Born in 1927 and passing away in 2001 of a heart attack, Robert Ludlum was the King of his profession writing International Bestsellers of adventure and espionage from the mid-seventies through the nineties. If the name does not ring a bell with you, think back to those American Express commercials on television where this Humphrey Bogart looking fellow with a brim hat and a long trench coat would entreaty you to never leave home without your Amex Card. Remember now?

Civic Club Supper
March 11th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns This past weekend KESA held their first Civic Club Supper for various organizations that are involved with volunteer activities. It turned out to be an interesting event with quite a bit of community discussions and general “shooting the bull” conversations. In other words, it was fun!

This was also the first event at the Alumni Center where our new full building sound system was put to use and it is absolutely beyond compare in this area. Without turning the sound up very high at all, you can now sit at any location within the building, at any table, and hear what is being broadcast as well as anyone in the facility. Speakers are spread out across the ceiling in three rows from front to back. Even the restrooms and the kitchen have their own speakers with adjustable volume controls so no one misses anything regardless of what they may be doing. (that covers quite a bit of ground doesn’t it?)

Easter Sunday at The Alumni Center
March 4th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns Did you know that Santa Claus is coming to town? No, wait a minute. Got to check my notes again. Oh that’s right, it’s the Easter Bunny that is coming to town. I have no idea if he checks his list twice or not, or come to think of it, if the Bunny is even a he? Could be a she I suppose. What do you think Fannie Mae?

You should start seeing posters popping up around town right about now advertising the big Kerens Easter Sunday Lunch followed by a Garden Park Egg Hunt on April 15th. All of you Kerens folks outside of town who are right this minute perusing the delights of the Kerens Tribune need to mark this one on your calendar because it will be a fun day on Main Street when the Bunny hits town this year. It would be a perfect occasion to come in and visit family and relatives. No doubt about it.

First K.I.S.D. Web Site
February 25th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns I am sitting here on this Sunday afternoon perusing the new Kerens Independent School District web site and am a bit amazed at what I am seeing. If you have not had the chance to look at this accomplishment by Donna Dean and her crew of new Webmasters, well I think your missing out on something special.

I knew Donna was working on something at the High School and expected to see a well done web page come out of the effort. What I am looking at now is not a web page, it is a full blown web site that encompasses virtually every aspect of K.I.S.D. activities and organization. For a first time out of the gate effort, they jumped right straight to the top of this county and area, including our county seat in Corsicana. Of course we all know that Bobcats do it better don’t we.

Valentines Day Dance
February 18th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns The Alumni Center in downtown has been awfully active these past few weeks. I think this past Saturday night was the second weekend in a row where a band was playing and people were dancing to the tunes of country and western music beneath the green tin roof put up last summer. I wonder why the color green was used?

One Year Column Anniversary
February 11th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns This week marks an anniversary, or maybe a milestone of some sort, in that it has been exactly one year since I sat here in front of my computer and wrote my first column for the Kerens Tribune. This is column number fifty-two making it a wrap on a nice bundle of articles carefully stashed away in my digital archives.

Walking To Kerens
February 4th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns This cold weather is going to be over with pretty soon and the mornings of Spring are just around the corner. Can’t wait. There is something about the atmosphere of this time of year that makes you want to get out and do something new, something different, begin the real start of the New Year with your annual Spring cleaning. Well, at least tell your wife to start her Spring cleaning anyway. Everybody knows us guys don’t know anything about the definition of that type of chore. Maybe what that really means is to get out your guns, pull out the cleaning oil, and wipe the barrels down smooth. That’s it! That’s what Spring cleaning is.

Web Designers
January 27th, 2001
Kerens Tribune Columns For all you aspiring young Webmasters out there, it’s about time we took a look once again at some tools that take you from the ordinary, to the outer reaches of what can be accomplished in this field.

By the way, I was reading a magazine last week that contained a survey of the best jobs to have as you head into the 21st century. The criterion for best job was salary paid and consequently the demand for people to fill these types of positions. The number one job is Financial Advisor which I am going to assume is due to the baby boomer generation reaching retirement age and needing people to help them down this path. Number two on this list is being a Webmaster. All you have to do is open your eyes in this dot.com age to see what is becoming an exploding demand for Web professionals. The advertisements on television for dot.com this and dot.com that, every magazine advertisement has a bullet referencing you to their web site, and eventually every community around you will have their own web site. Of course Kerens is leading the way in this area. Personal web sites, professional web sites, government web sites, they are everywhere!
