Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #94 Harry Potter vs Frodo Baggins December 10th, 2001
|
|
The controversy is still raging. I have heard arguments on both sides and points are still being made daily stating which one is the best and which will prevail over the long run in the annals of history. The Kerens Literary Club needs to make a statement on this and establish their position before this escalates into a full-scale worldwide war.
Is it Harry Potter or is it Frodo Baggins? Where does Bilbo place? Is it “The Sorcerer’s Stone” or is it “The Lord of the Rings”? Those are the real questions.

“I Wanna Hold Your Hand” is what they said on a Sunday night long ago when most of us had yet to learn of a small country named Vietnam. Remember those long haired boys that our parents made fun of because they didn’t have flat tops or crew cuts? Remember those moptop haircuts that every boy wanted to have? Remember the Garry Moore Show and his famous spoof of the band with his own “The Cockroachers” that was so entertaining to the adults because it ridiculed the Beatles? I will never forget it.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #92 Computer Virus Prevention November 26th, 2001
|
|
We have talked in the past about various tools you can use to detect a virus on your computer. This includes the various Tool Suites such as the ones provided by Norton and McAfee and others. These are great for finding a virus and removing it from your system, but typically these tools come into action only after you have received an email bomb. Another limitation is these tools will not even detect a virus if you have not kept your virus signature library up to date with regular update downloads from your tool provider. If a new virus is created and received by your computer after you have purchased a virus detection tool, in most cases it will be undetectable. Nothing was known about it when they made the tool so it does not recognize the evil in it’s current form. If you are like me, doing these regular updates does slip by from time to time leaving a person in a weakened state of defense. Kind of like missing the inoculation shots for your cats isn’t it? So what do you do?

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #91 Keeping Your Computer Updated November 19th, 2001

|
As we move into the Christmas segment of the year, you either still have your computer from last year, or you are about to get a new one. Either way, like death and taxes and KESA Sunday Buffets, you cannot escape the inevitable pacing of technology. If by chance you do not have a computer, not going to get a computer and do not want one. . . then go ahead and pretend this is a story of science fiction and read it anyway.

Did you see all of those cars on Main Street Saturday night? Somebody told me they rode through town at about 8:00 p.m. that night and parking spaces were a bit scarce on both sides of the street. There was a group of kids playing in front of the Alumni Center under the lights and groups of people were standing around talking. All of this on Main Street? Things sure have changed over the last year. All you have to do is look around and imagine what it was like just before the century clock flipped a digit.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #89 Homecoming Parade November 5th, 2001

Rolling down Main Street in the Homecoming parade, the first thing I see is all of those pretty blonde haired Cossey sisters sitting together in a group. Doesn’t it make you smile when you see all of them together at once? A true family icon in the history of Kerens.
Then I look up in the air and see all of Glynn Holloway’s flags flying high in the air over the Alumni Center. I have never seen the Six Flags of Texas flying on Main Street in any town in Texas and suspect this will become another symbol of our heritage as the years breeze by in the never ending march of time. Many people will never be able to see the Six Flags of Texas again without thinking of what their own hometown has done with this part of Texas History.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #88 Homecoming Activities October 28th, 2001

By the time Sunday morning rolls around this weekend, your going to be feeling a bit worn after all the Homecoming People are done with you. Looking around at how many Homecoming people are waiting on you, don’t even think about surviving. You are hopelessly outnumbered.
Early Friday evening when you walk into the School Cafeteria for a burger, the Kiwanis Club is going to surround you leaving no avenue for escape. In fact, you are probably going to end up eating two of those special Kiwanis hamburgers while waiting for an escape route to open up. Here is a tip. Wear something green for camouflage and maybe you can mingle in with the crowd coming in and out of the doors.

With sparks twinkling in her eyes, ninety year old Jewell Hutson leaped out of her chair and hurled a wad of paper at Coach James Kelley.
“I’ll get you back!” she said with a tone of voice that caught the attention of all. The people in the crowd look at each other and grew quite for a split second, and then . . .

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #86 Corporate Security Post Nine Eleven October 15th, 2001

Anybody curious what it is like scurrying around in a large world wide corporation during this scare with wartime terrorism? If you are, stay tuned and listen to this stuff. It's decently interesting. Texas Instruments was right in the middle of the Gulf War ten years ago with the guidance systems we had designed for military targeting usage, but our focus on security and apprehension of attack was really not there. Certainly not like it is right now. Looking back, I think maybe it is because we considered it such a remote possibility that any counter attacks would occur right here in the USA. Now it is not such a far-fetched scenario as we are all well aware.

Christmas in October, Yes, I know it’s early, by a couple of months, but last Saturday I saw it in action and it really was a Christmas event. Not very long ago one of our special volunteers in Kerens made a visit to a financial advisor in Corsicana to make sure he was getting rich according to schedule. Well, as things happen sometimes, the advisor also happened to be in charge of the annual Christmas in October effort in Corsicana. And of course during the due course of conversation, one thing led to another.

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #84 Getting Ready For Homecoming September 30th, 2001

Preparations are going on as we speak for homecoming and people are running everywhere. There is so much to do in order to be ready for all our ex-students when they come home. We all have quite a challenge to be as successful in 2001 as we were in 2000 when there was such a great crowd in downtown for the festivities.

Kerens was gathered in the Garden Park this weekend speaking out for our country. Our Mayor was standing on the Main Street side of the Kerens Library with the old Kerens Water Tower standing guard in the background, and quite a picturesque scene it made. A public address system was setup and patriotic speeches were being made and the crowd was singing songs. It was a great time and a great idea by the leader of this City as we all gathered around her. Our Tribune Editor Neal Williams pitched in and gave us a perspective on the changes coming for our country due to the World Trade Center Disaster as did several others as they stood and expressed their thoughts related to the crisis our country is enduring.

Kerens Blonde: “Oh Please guys. You are not exactly running around in diapers.”

One thing I forgot to mention hearing at the Alumni Center Sunday Buffet a few days ago is that our Mayor and her husband Larry Christie made a trip to Lake Tahoe recently. Both of them exclaimed how pretty the area is and specifically the hiking trails that abound around this mountainous region. Gail mentioned how she had made it to the top of a trail they had been on, but I am not sure Larry made it. This was probably a very opportune time for him to see these trails and for a good reason. We will get back to this later.

There were two different kinds of barbecue beef being served plus sausage and ribs and chicken. Hot German Potato Salad, Texas Toast, home made cobblers, spicy beans and Buddy Hughes spooning out ice cream to every one passing by his food station. If you have not had the occasion to make a KESA Sunday Buffet after Church yet, well you may be a couple of pounds lighter, no doubt about it.

A: Three. One to screw in the lightbulb and two to fend off all those
Californians trying to share the experience.
