Emmitt Smith Breaks Record

The most anticipated event of the 21st century came to past last weekend right in the middle of a drizzling Sunday afternoon. Rockets were flying in the air, thousands of balloons were let loose and dancers were parading in front of a gigantic crowd. Most people were cheering wildly while others were shedding tears in a moment of unmatchable emotional exhilaration.
All of you Ladies out there know exactly what happened and some of you guys probably had an inkling of history in the making. This was the weekend that Emmitt Smith of the Mighty Dallas Cowboys shattered the all-time NFL gridiron rushing record. It was a real football day for those who swear by the pigskin and snap to attention each time a coin is tossed.

Ennis Super WalMart Grand Opening

We were approaching from the South and you could see the brightly lit sign ahead in the distance flashing its message over and over. Here it was Saturday night, we had put on our good clothes were ready to experience this special event that we had never had the opportunity to experience before. What fun this was going to be and the anticipation was rising as we drew closer and closer to our destination.
The highway exit arrives and we turn off and straight into a parking lot with more cars in it than maybe exist in the entire town of Kerens. There were a few pickups in the lot too, no doubt about it. No chance of getting a spot close to the entrance so finally we end up in the South Forty where you almost need a pair of binoculars to see the front door. It looks cloudy, so hurriedly we gather what we need and walk quickly across the parking lot.

Homecoming Weekend

This had to be the busiest homecoming we have yet to see in this bustling town. I do not see how you could possibly cram more in a couple of days then we managed to do this time around the horn.
Daylight on Friday there were Kerens Alumni covering the greens at the Cross Roads Golf Course. Did you even know Cross Roads has a golf course? I didn’t. Finish eighteen holes and the crowd heads to the Kiwanis Hamburger supper at the High School Cafeteria. Wolf down that burger and off to the homecoming football game. A few hours sleep and daylight arrives again with the KESA Pancake Breakfast at the Alumni Center. Rush outside and catch the Homecoming Parade. Rush back inside and loads of Chamber of Commerce barbecue is waiting on you. Gulping down the food you have just enough time to whistle the Star Spangled Banner and then the KESA Annual Membership Meeting kicks off at 2:00 p.m. A couple of hours to change clothes and off to the 2002 Homecoming Dance at the Alumni Center.

Homecoming Preparations

This is it, homecoming weekend, that tiny part of the year when the Ex-Students of Kerens return to their hometown to recapture part of their roots and visit with old friends. Homecoming is a comfortable time of year when the leaves are beginning to fade to those pretty autumn colors and begin to drift around in clumps across our lawns. The days have lost that edge of the blistering Texas heat and the nights cool down right along with our electric bill.

Doris Chrisman reads Time Magazine, I know she does. Now this is a bit of a Liberal magazine, but it is a good one. If you want to stay up on current events and read editorials that can be classified absolutely with “As The World Turns,” this is the one for you. Doris can tell you. I enjoy this magazine right up there with the best of any current periodicals and it has endured through the years with but little change in its format. If you like history, that small section in the middle titled “Time – 25 Years Ago” is fun to reminisce through.

The Origin of Taps

During the September 11th service that Kerens had a week or so ago Bobby Bain stood up and played Taps on his trumpet. It looked like it might be a fairly old trumpet and now I am wondering if it is one he might have played in his Kerens Bobcat days? Reckon? Whether or not it is the same one, he played that melody during a moment of polar silence that through the years we have come to expect with this particular piece of music. Contrast the sound of Taps with maybe that of a typical military marching tune such as “As Those The Caissons Go Rolling Along.” I think I got that line right.

A Tribute to the Fallen of 9/11

Standing room only. All the seats taken and Pastor Wes Johnson, the Master of Ceremonies, was looking up and down the aisles for a place to put the overflow crowd. The parking lot was full and cars lined the street in front of the First Baptist Church. The city fire trucks and police cars were in a row as a tribute to the men who serve their communities in time of trouble and strife. Even old Titan, the one-eyed town dog, was standing at attention outside the church and knew something big was going down. The town of Kerens had something to be proud of on Wednesday night, September 11th, as we all gathered to honor and support and pray for our many heroes that came out of the ashes of the World Trade Center.

Football Season Is Here

“Play Ball !!” No that’s not it. I think it might be “Heads or Tails !!” Yea that’s right. That is how the game starts.
Football season has kicked off and such an exciting time of year it is. Well, at least for most guys and some gals it is anyway, especially all of us ex-Bobcats that so fondly remember our years in the green and white uniforms.
Have you ever heard one of those single minded football coaches make the statement “It Builds Character” and then pooh pooh it off and respond with “It’s just a game, how can that build character?” I think maybe you might have heard that a few times. My response? Those coaches are absolutely dead-on and character is a very very big part of this game for youth to participate in as well as other sports activities.

September 11th, 2002 is just a few days away now and maybe a time for reflection upon the changes in our lives and our country since this same day only one year in our past. Has your life changed?
This was one of those disasters of such a human magnitude that your memory is burned with an imprint telling you for the rest of your life exactly where you were and what you were doing at the very moment when you learned the World Trade Center had disappeared from the landscape of America. Not by accident had the towers fallen, but by an act of intentional design to strike terror into the lives of all Americans.

The day is bright and the day is pretty as Fall begins to peek out from the woods some miles away. The Kerens Blonde pulls a white curtain back and looks outside with a big eyed wistful look. She is getting fidgety. A plodding pace to the wall and then back to the other wall. Maybe wash dishes, maybe wash everyone’s underwear, but it just doesn’t seem exciting on this day, a day that somehow seems brighter than the on before. What to do what to do. With a shake of her head, blonde hair twirling, she purses her lips and muses “Oh if Super Wal-Mart was not so far, far away.”

Walking Gettysburg

I told you about the cemeteries around Gettysburg but did not have the space for us to visit the battleground that day. So, let’s put on our Civil War hats and travel back in time by about 140 years give or take a few weekends.
The Battle of Gettysburg lasted for three long and violently bloody days in early July of 1863 with the last day, July 3rd, being the one that is most talked about and generally considered the one where not only this battle, but also the war was won by the North. It is estimated some 8 million rounds of ammunition were fired during the battle, almost incomprehensible to even try to imagine. This is also the day where General George Pickett was ordered by Pete Longstreet to charge, and indeed he did charge right into history.

What a trip to the circus that was this weekend and how exciting it was on a blistering hot August afternoon. Fun and merriment, drink and a hotdog, people everywhere waving their arms with eyes shining in sync with the passion of this annual extravaganza. Oh how did I ever miss the enjoyment of this event during the past few years?
So you did not see this circus in town? Did not even know it had arrived? Well, it was behind closed doors which sort of hid from the outside world what was really going on inside. But, the building does happen to be one of my favorite hangouts, the Wal-Mart Store at College Park Mall. So what was the circus? The annual Tax Free shopping day maybe?

Texas and Gettysburg

“Where is Texas?” That was the thought rolling around in my mind some minutes after I entered the gates of the Gettysburg National Cemetery a few days ago. All of the gravesites were arranged by state, but no southern states at all were to be found. My biggest surprise for the entire trip happened a short while later when I quizzed one of the park rangers for the location of the Confederate soldiers who had died in this battle. His reply, “No Confederate soldiers were allowed to be buried here.”

“That’s the finest pecan pie I have ever had” is NOT what Ted Price said when he was in town not too long ago for a Kerens Alumni Center Game Night. He had made a faithful trip from Houston to Kerens supporting his Alumni organization and here I went and almost got him in trouble. He had visited the Double D Steakhouse and enjoyed being able to eat in town, especially the desert he had knocked down after his meal.
