And Now You Do

Tales from Elm Flat: Halloween in the Old Days
Elm Flat Halloween in Kerens back in the old days was a time when children had great fun, and sometimes a little mischief got thrown in to boot. Nowadays when I treat little spooks at my front door, some of my own haunting memories come rushing back. There are recollections of Halloween costumes, of Halloween parties and hay rides, of trick-or-treat forays, and even of high jinx that went a little beyond usual expectations.

The weather usually seemed to cooperate with this nocturnal occasion. October weather in Kerens is always quite a welcome relief from the 100-degree days from back in August and the still-warm days of September, and at the time of Halloween temperatures might even fall into the 50s or 60s, with the possibility of a refreshing or even chilling breeze. I cannot remember a single occasion when rain intruded upon the festivities—not during the 1950s when it seldom seemed to rain at all! The Halloween ambience included some characteristic sights and smells. As for the visual environment, can you recall that we always seemed to have a full moon—sometimes called the harvest moon, with its pagan connotations, or Comanche moon, with its images of Indian raiding parties? Do you recall, as you made your spooky trick-or-treat visits, the crackling of fallen leaves and the crunching sound of pecans as they cracked under foot? Finally, Halloween season in Kerens, to me, will always be associated with the acrid smell of burning cotton burrs as this smell (dare I say aroma?) drifted into town from the surrounding fields where farmers added valuable nutrients to their soil by burning cotton burrs picked up as a by-product from local gins.

Local News: Groundbreaking for New Cinema Complex
Local Events randyghughes21 writes "Yesterday morning ground was broken for the new eight screen Cinergy Cinema complex which hopefully will be open in June of this Summer. Mayor Buster Brown, Chamber of Commerce, Paul Hooper, Byron Cook, and Congressman Joe Barton from Ellis county were among the many people to break ground for this new entertainment complex. It will be next to Home Depot and Gander Mountain in Corsicana Crossing. Jeffrey Benson of Cinergy Cinemas explained they hope to add on three more screens in the future. This will be great for Corsicana and Navarro county. "

Foxtales: Foxtales May '09
Foxtales For some strange reason, I have a strong aversion to those who mispronounce words that are a part of my vocabulary. I suppose the worst, and most aggravating is the incorrect pronouncement of the word nuclear,.making it into an incorrect, and harshly crisp word (nu cu lar). I’m fanatical, I know, but that word has become my new litmus test for everyone I meet or see on TV. Plenty of folks in very high places make that mistake in their every speech. I must be the only person on earth, besides David Letterman, that it aggravates to that extent.

Local News: local growth 2010
Local Events randyghughes21 writes "It was good news last week when I read a new eight screen cinema with stadium seating and digital sound would be opening later this summer. Cinergy Cinemas will break ground January 6th, 2010 next to Home Depot and Gander Mountain. The new complex should be open by late June. Hopefully more good news should come Corsicana's way in this new year of 2010. it will be welcomed."

News: Anglican Catholic Conference
News frbob writes "The Rev. Dr. Bobby C. Hall, SSM and wife, Patricia, recently traveled to San Antonio Texas to attend a conference held at Our Lady of Atonement Catholic Church. The purpose of this meeting was to examine and discuss the recently release Apostolic Constitution dealing with groups of Anglicans coming into full sacramental communion with the Latin Rite Church in Rome. This was the first meeting of its type since the release of the Anglicanorum Coetibus by Pope Benedict XVI which provides the mechanism by which Anglican Clergy and their associated parishes will be accepted into communion with the Holy See. Priests and interested parishioners from as far away as California attended to hear Canon Lawyers and educators from the St. Joseph Foundation explain the working details of the Apostolic Constitution."

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #182
Colon my Colon
September 1st, 2003
Kerens Tribune Columns I passed the half-century mark last year and had to go in for that annual physical that some of us do not mind, and some of us had rather lay naked out on Main Street than go through this ordeal. Is that more of a problem with guys than gals? I wonder.

The physical went okay, but when it was over the doctor makes this casual remark: “You know this is the age where you need to get a colonoscopy. Call my nurse and lets get that scheduled in the next few weeks.”

My mind took a few seconds to process the word “colonoscopy” but as soon as it did, I was ready to go home. “Not today doc. In fact, I am real busy the next few weeks. Extremely busy.”

Local News: christmas hope
News randyghughes21 writes "I'm hopeing everyone in this area will have a great Christmas. Let's not forget our military troops overseas as they defend our freedom from those who would seek to destroy it. Also remember the homeless and those who might not have as good a Christmas. Also remember the Salvation Army who does so much good this time of the year. If you can, give money to those who are down on their luck. The Salvation Army are God's Angels in this world. Give a toy so a small child might have a brighter Christmas."

Southern Cross Ranch: Home Town Blues
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Last night Katy and I traveled over to Hunt County to my High School home-coming game. This is the first time I have been back in over 20 years. We stopped in Rockwall and saw some old friends and then went on to Quinlan and watched the game until half time. I don't know what I expected. The nostaligia was ok but for the first time since my folks passed on, I felt like a fish out of water. I did not feel like I still belonged there but like a stranger. Even though I saw some old faces and patted some backs, I felt like I was alone in a sea of new faces. But the funny thing is some times I feel that way in Kerens. I have been told that if your not born and raised here you will always be an outsider. That is a shame because Katy and I try maybe too hard sometimes to fit in. Of course there are a lot of nice folks here and we have a few close friends and yes a few enemies. But I always figure that is their loss if you don't like me. So be it. "

Foxtales: My Great Grandmother Lula
Foxtales I had a "book club"/ study group in my home on Wednesday nights in 1993. It was a wonderful thing for me, because I was getting increasingly worse with the rheumatoid factor raging out of control. (Rheumatoid Disease) and affecting my ability to move about ,and even to stand alone or even to walk. For that reason it was good to stay in the comfort of my own home. It was a group of like-minded individuals meeting weekly to share ideas and review one book at a time. After two years I had to withdraw from my part in smoothing the progress of a superb activity. Luckily, a member of the group stepped up to the plate to aid in the study. It lasted for seven years and some of the group still meet. It was a good thing! It was an envelope of time, that when over, was sealed and added to the other wonderful comings and goings of my past; all similar in nature.

And It Was Said
QuotesThose of us who believe in the right of any human being to belong to whatever
church he sees fit, and to worship God in his own way, cannot be accused
of prejudice when we do not want to see public education connected with
religious control of the schools, which are paid for by taxpayers' money.
- Eleanor Roosevelt
