I Didn't Know
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp. Ben Franklin owned a mill that made hemp paper. The US Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.

And Now You Do

Tales from Elm Flat: Birthdays in the Country
Elm Flat You know, growing up in the country, with eight brothers and sisters--nine of us in all plus Mom and Dad--birthdays were not really a big thing. With eleven of us, having a birthday party for every one would have cut seriously into work time and chore time. Even so, our parents, Mom particularly, always found some way to recognize each child’s birthday, generally not a party, but maybe a cake, maybe a Happy Birthday song, maybe a birthday card. There was really no set pattern, and I do not recollect that any single child got all three things—cake, song, and card.

Favorite foods were one way to recognize birthdays, with Mom taking the time and care to prepare your favorite dish for dinner or supper on your birthday. With me there was really no question. I always asked for Mom’s homemade angel food cake with cherry-flavored butter icing! Mom’s angel food cake was, to me, delicious beyond description, and if you have only had angel food cake from the grocery store or a bakery, you still have not the slightest conception of how delicious this desert can be! Dad would sometimes prepare his specialty, bread pudding with a marvelous orange-flavored sauce to pour over it, and I know there must have been requests for peach cobbler pie, which we ate with cream British style, not sweetened or whipped up into a froth.

Local News: New Arbys
News randyghughes21 writes "In the not too distant future at the intersection of Highway 45 and East Highway 31, there will be a new store that sells Shell gasoline with a new Arbys Restaurant. That is good news for our area. I'm looking forward to the restaurant opening in a few months.

Also in other local news they have started putting up the walls for the new Cinergy Cinema in Corsicana Crossing. Hopefully by this summer the new complex will be open."

In Corsicana Crossing they are working on the Cinergy Cinema site. Maybe by late Summer or early Fall this new 8 screen complex will be open. This cinema will feature 3-D Movies with a game arcade, concession stands, and stadium seating. It will be a nice addition to the businesses already out there."

Foxtales: GATHERING AND TOSSING
Foxtales What About All This Stuff?

How on earth did I accumulate all this stuff? I wonder as I sit here, how many others have asked themselves that same question. I sometimes wonder why we don’t all realize that the accumulation is growing and growing as it is doing so. Why does there have to come a day of reckoning when we realize that something must be done about all this! Were we just irrational before the day of reckoning?

Goodwill?
Heavens to Betsy, my grandmother used to say at such a time. I’ve never before now in my life had a truck come to my house to pick up my cast offs. Well, of course not! I was too busy going to the Goodwill and Salvation Army to gather their treasures for myself to take home and gloat over and treasure in disbelief that the things cost so little.

They have a tightly knit community. My mom played on the girls basketball team when she went to school there. It is a wonderful place. "

Tribune Columns: Kerens.Com #184
The BigTex FFL
September 15th, 2003
Kerens Tribune Columns A couple of weeks ago there was a gathering of middle age grey haired men in the vicinity of the Kerens Bank that some might think strange if you did not know these guys. From all across Texas they came into the town of Kerens for their once a year gathering and a reincarnation of something long ago lost in the past. This was a gathering of the Rural League of Distinguished Gentlemen that left home in Kerens long ago, but have never forgotten their origins.

Once upon a time Robert Ivey and I were at Chris Howell’s Fish Fry in Rural Shade playing some cards with the gang. In between hands we got to talking about football and we got on the subject of this new thing we had been seeing in the Dallas newspapers called “Fantasy Football.” The Dallas Morning News was putting on a promotion and soliciting people to join up and compete with their own team. We talked about joining, but then got to thinking about it and wondered why we could not do the same thing ourselves. Why not? The biggest task was to put all the weekly stats together and get them out to the participating teams. We drew up some plans and called some old friends and the answer we got was “Lets Do It.”

Foxtales: My Fantastic Story of a Slot Machine
Foxtales It was a well known fact in my family that my dad had a lot of different jobs in his life.

A particular one stood out in my memory all my life; probably because it included the counting of money. My dad went to work as a waiter at a place called the Sky View Supper Club in Dallas when I was six. He wore a tuxedo with a satin stripe down the side of his pants; you might know I’d remember that detail. Lol. I remember that he really looked spiffy…with his black hair and dark olive skin tone. There was a place to dance on the roof; open air, with a short retaining wall around it all. He got a lot of tips, and came home with heaps of coins in his pockets. He would pour them all out on the table and he and I would roll them with papers. I was in “hog heaven“, to use a Southern term, having so much money roll through my fingers. I had never before had the opportunity for such a good time, and had never seen that much money at one time! Just me and my dad; I loved that. We were buddies. Back in the day, tips were in coin form usually, as no one tipped big as they do now. There were very few bills. Mother and I rode over there one time on the streetcar to meet daddy as he was getting off work.

Local News: SFA Alumni Association News: Barnett scholarship
News sfaalumni writes "Barnett Scholarship to benefit Texas residents

The Donald Wayne Barnett Memorial Scholarship benefits a resident or native of select Texas cities and counties or a student with financial need. The scholarship honors a man who felt deep gratitude for his SFA education and wanted others to have the chances he did. His family and friends established the scholarship to benefit people like him.
Don Barnett ’62 & ’64 was born on a farm on the blackland prairie of North Central Texas in 1935 and graduated from Kerens High School, where he excelled in football. He began dating Patricia Anderson in 1956. The Barnetts marked their 52nd wedding anniversary in 2009. They are life members of the SFA Alumni Association. Don worked as a roughneck before taking more regular work in Nacogdoches to support his growing family. He earned a B.A and M.A. from SFA while working full time. He managed cafeterias at SFA until retiring in 1997. Don enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, visiting old friends in Kerens and Corsicana, and finding lost treasures."

Foxtales: THE SEVEN LAYER CAKE
Foxtales SECOND IN A SERIES OF ESOTERIC EXPERIENCES

Thoughts and feelings are the hardest of all things to write about. This one is about coming unhinged in time.

THE SEVEN LAYER CAKE

This account of a simple, singular, incident, occurred when I was approaching the age of seven. It will barely qualify as a short story; because there just isn’t enough to it at all. It consists merely of walking from our garage, through the kitchen door, past the kitchen, past mother and the dining room, to the living room. All the while I was pondering very deep thoughts that were way above the head of a seven year old child. I asked my mother an unanswerable question while she was fast at work, and oh, so focused on beating the batter of my birthday cake, planning a different colored layer for each year of my life.)

Corsicana a great place to live and work
News randyghughes21 writes "Corsicana has been my hometown for over 59 years. We have Derrick days in the Spring which honors the oil rich history of Corsicana and Navarro County. Corsicana is also the home of The Deluxe Collin Street fruitcake which is shipped worldwide each Christmas season. It is also home to Russell Stover candies on Highway 287. They are a great place to drop for a treat. Friendly people are also in this great community. I'm blessed to live in such a fine place. I think we all are."

I plan on being there for opening day. As Paris Hilton said, "That's Hot.""

Foxtales: The Apparition At the Foot Of My Bed
Foxtales This experience was the granddaddy of them all! At age sixteen, while living in the Big White House, in Kerens Texas, I startled my entire family with a blood curdling scream! They ran to my rescue from all corners of the house, thinking, of course, that something horrible was happen-ing to me. Not the case. I still don’t know why I screamed; because after I did, I just kept right on, and after sitting up in bed, the appearance of a smallish man with a black satin top hat like Abraham Lincoln wore to his inaugural was still standing there. His face was slightly round, with a very kind countenance. There was light where he stood, but not in the room.

Movies: Alice In Wonderland
Big Screen Movies randyghughes21 writes "At the Rave Cinema in North Texas, I saw a wonderful movie, Alice in Wonderland. It is based on the Lewis Carrol story. Anne Hathaway plays the white queen and Helena Bonham Carter plays the red queen . Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter. The girl in the movie falls down a hole and wakes up in a strange land. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves happy endings. It is well worth the money. Disney Studios does it once again. Mr. Disney had the foresight to put out such great movies."
