Student Scholarships
June 2nd, 2003
Kerens Tribune Columns The end of May 2003 and at the end of this particular month you can count on a big gathering in Kerens. It is graduation night where all of these kids who have waltzed through four years of High School make their first steps into the real world. I always thought High School was easier than the real world.

Tales from Elm Flat: Scrapping Cotton
Elm Flat
Column by Dr. Ivan R. Vernon

My brothers and sisters and I made money for our school clothes by picking cotton in the fall. My brothers and I tried to make enough money to buy two or three pairs of blue jeans, half a dozen tee shirts, some long-sleeved shirts to wear to school, a pair of tennis shoes, and a pair of dress shoes to wear to church. We also hoped to have enough to buy some socks, a belt, and maybe even a blue jean jacket. If we had plenty of money, we would buy extras such as slacks and dress shirts for Sunday.

Business: Waxahachie to get new Cinema
News rrandyghughes writes "In the future, Waxahachie residents will have a new place to take in a movie. Showbiz Cinemas is building a new cinema in Waxahachie, Texas. It will be a new 12 screen cinema with stadium seating and possibly Dolby Digital sound. It will be located on Broadhead Road near the intersection of Highway 287 where several retail and restaurants call home. J.C. Penneys has a store near the proposed site. The Target retail store is not far away. Waxahachie seems to be growing every time I have been up there."

JoAnne: THE NEW YEAR -- THE LAND OF BEGINNING AGAIN
by JoAnne Tuttle
JoAnne Oh, where is that land
That land of beginning again?
We long to set forth on the voyage
To find that land
Leaving all past mistakes behind
Reviving our sinking hearts
To find peace and contentment
Like never before we've known

Business: New Collin Street Retail Store in Waco, Texas
News rrandyghughes writes "There will be a new Collins Street Bakery retail store in the Waco area of Bellmead, Texas. It will be a ten thousand square foot store like the one in Corsicana on Highway 45 and Highway 287. The new Waco store will be located on Highway 31 at the intersection of Interstate 35 in Bellmead. The new Collin Street Bakery store should be open next Fall by Thanksgiving or Christmas 2008. It will also have tasty sandwiches for the Waco lunch crowd. I'm sure they will have their yummy Collin Street Bakery fruitcakes on display."

Southern Cross Ranch: A Lot of Crow With Some Humble Pie
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "A while back I wrote a article about who would be our next president and thinking I am some sort of political expert was dead wrong. First of all, I had John Mccain out of this thing months ago. Well ok, I was wrong, dead wrong. Here he was one footstep from the political grave yard and then the next he is one step away from the oval office. OK, so I made a mistake."

Who was she kidding when she sang that song? I did not want to go at all but the tickets had already been purchased and the trip scheduled. Plus, I had already taken all of my shots.

Tales from Elm Flat: Trombone Torture
Elm Flat
Column by Dr. Ivan R. Vernon

Some people are born with a talent for music, and they can learn to play a musical instrument as naturally as a duck takes to water. Hand them an instrument, give them a few lessons, and they are off and running. I am not one of those people, and therein lies the theme of this little tale.

My father loved music, and encouraged me to participate in the Kerens school music program. Actually, in my case at least, the word “encourage” is a bit weak, and the word “insist” hits a little closer to the mark!

Southern Cross Ranch: MY FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR, OR IS IT?
Southern Cross Ranch southerncrossranch writes "Well, it seems to me spring is always my favorite time of year. The grass is growing and the trees all come in to bloom. The children are soon to be out of school. The fish are biting and what more could you ask? Winter is gone and life is reappearing but wait, is this all so great?

I have hay fever and allergies, my eyes are swealing shut and I am sneezing my head off. It is time for a vacation from the dark days of winter and gas prices are too high to go anywhere or do anything. And, I have all this fence repair to do on the the ranch. Mercy will it never end. The bugs are out thick and biting every time I fire up the tractor and all these weeds, where did they come from?"

Annika Sorenstam & Golf
May 19th, 2003
Kerens Tribune Columns In the past few months we have had a Space Shuttle blow up, the United States invaded a foreign country, North Korea is threatening nuclear war, our Texas Liberals ran out of town to hide in an Oklahoma motel (must be a Liberal state), but there is another huge story brewing now that is racing onto the radar screen. A political correctness battle of immense proportions.

Annika Sorenstam has been invited to play in the MEN’s Colonial Invitational Pro Golf Tournament. The world is ending. Armageddon must be just around the corner with all the hoopla this is raising all over the country. Have you been listening to this stuff? Vijay Singh, the male pro golfer that just got through winning the Byron Nelson tournament threw his clubs in the water and said “Enough!” and withdrew from the Colonial Tournament. He knows what is going on.
